Q: Ideas for Photo Contests
Posted By:

aaron

Greetings Gang!

I'm soliciting ideas for photo contests in what you guys would like to see... I have a few ideas up my sleeve (and a couple of incredible ideas shoved up my sleeve from Jenn), so feel free to let me know what you think!

I'd like to do stuff like

* best outdoor shot (later in the year,... too chilly now)
* field herp shot
* human/herp photo

Etc.

Thanks!
Aaron

* Best cage/enclosure set up (which would disqualify me since i use paper towels).
* You could do a "Best of" for the more popular species although you would have to set one up for pretty much every species.

I would love the best field herp shot, but i was also thinking you could do a best pet shot for these catagories:

Snake
Lizard
Turtle/Tortoise
Crocidilian
Frog
Salamander

You could also do something involving breeding; Best pairing pics maybe... Although i guess thats like looking at snake porn huh?

I think you should come up with 12 categories. I see the making of a 2010 iherp calendar. Best of species category, Best macro shot, Best reptile porn for Nate, maybe some holiday shots like Best Xmas herp, Best looking herper in Rhinestone Chaps category, you know stuff like that........

Heck it would be cool to see kai's yellow head with antlers on but I think being the season to be jolly one of the red bloods would be better....add some tinsel with the cyprus mulch....Wait a beardie with a Santa caps on!!

oooohh, I like the tongue shot idea....I love capturing those!  What about "Best herp Eyeball (macro)"...kind of a guess what animal it is type thing?

Assisted Answer 11/2/2008 7:42:39 PM

i like best of species, feeding shots, best macro (go ahead and give it to mack), tongue shot sounds fun, best herp room, i found my escaped herp, origional enclosure, rare species, and finally: my significant other holding my herp. those are always fun.
i'd really like to see what the iHerp community chose as favorite chondro....

I like the idea of the significant other holding the herp, and so many versions of the best macro - guess the species by skin or eye, head shots, tongue shots - all neat ideas.  If you haven't seen any macroreptile skin shots, I came across one guy's website once who was collecting macro skin shots of different snake species, the major rule for the pictures being that ventral scales and the peak/curvature of the vertebral column were not shown, pretty much taking away all cues most of us would use to identify species - they made some very artistic photos!

I also like the idea of herp room photos more than individual cage setups... and the idea of a calendar!  I don't know what it would cost to put a calendar together, but it's appealing!

Ooooh!  Yes!!  We need good PR through good T-shirts!!  ...Ya know, in addition to our cool online community.  :)

I'm a bit bummed honestly that I never heard about this website until I went to Tinley this year -- but VERY glad I know about it now!

you know I have been thinking that too alot of people have snake tattoos and they are realy beautiful but it does exclude at the least a five year demographic of users...
I think April fools day would be a great occasion for the photo shopped pic idea!
Febuary would be a great time for herp kisses or Herp and couples pics. Valentines day
St. Patricks day brings to mind all sorts of green pets pics!
Easter would be great for eggs and hatchling pics!
I think also a pirate vs ninja photo contest would be good since everyone seems to love that debate. Snakes go with both in one way or another.
may and mothers day is great for moms and snakes'/herps pics
....i have too many in my head... I need caffine now
July for patriotic herp pics think dont tread on me

Yeah thats kinda what I was saying as far as seasonal goes, and then again there are those random ones just to keep you on your toes :D

Ooooh did I just detect a bit of hostility there Nate...we know what you're going to do with the Spicy food eating contest so the atomic threat is already there....and I think you've just been told.....again.....you tell him Leiren!!

Lots of great ideas Jenn. Did we forget father's day hmmm or do I have to put on a pretty outfit for May......I'm still working on the pirate one lol......

I like the seasonal suggestions!  Especially the 4th of July - "Don't Tread On Me!"  I've seen lots of pics of non-hots on here already that would fit well.  :)

...but what would we do for Thanksgiving??  Feed out turkey chicks?  ;)

Im an infinitely patient man Jeff. Im sure ill get the chance to meet all of you at some point and when i do.....But for now, i do love you guys.

I may be biased here, but for thanksgiving i think it would give a lot of corn snake owners a chance to show off the "maize" pattern on the bellies of their snakes being as it is how they got their name. Can i get someone to second that?

I also think that these colder months of the year would be an awesome time to focus on the non snake portion of this community since a lot of breeders will have their show stopping snakes in brumation. Im all out of spectacular ideas of course, but i know someone will think of some.

not all snakes brumate, you prejudiced colubrid breeder  ;)

the changing leaves would be a great backdrop for a colour changes. You know one pic of a lizard one colour and then one pic of it another......and whatever else changes colour, some frogs I think do. I also think that during the show season a good contest could be best iherp cameo photo. You know sneaking to the iherp booths and taking a pic giving Aaron and any soul brave enough to help him bunny ears or devil horns. Leaving pink chaps on the table whilst he is away.... or just you and your friends chillin at the iherp setups with your new herps.

Ill throw up the bunny ears on Aaron if i ever get to see him at a show. Maybe i could buy one of his chondros and convince him to deliver it to Hamburg. Kim Heller can help me take the picture.

I didnt make you log into iherp while working. The force is not strong within me. Your slacking is your own fault.

Instead of swimming, you could just fly into Phili. I think Aaron with bunny ears would be awesome for easter. I guess we should stop talking about it though. Now hes going to have his guard up.

I was enjoying the break personally. Getting my butt kicked on an online forum while spending the day cleaning can be rather brutal on a man.

No one has mentioned what could be done for the late summer, early fall period of the year and i think that would be an awesome time for shots of eggs and hatchlings.

Oh yeah, the best way to learn to swim is to get thrown in the water. As far as a fear of heights, im right there with you.

How about color themes? IE Green, Red, Black, etc...

I hear you. Must be a tough life having no kids. I just had the enjoyment of telling my son who asked what's for dinner and I told him there's feeders thawing out in the tub. He gave me a real strange look.....

The eggs and hatchlings is a nice idea. Late fall and early would probably a good time to get in some colorful outdoor shots or hmm maybe pics of herps with little backpacks on and lunch boxes going back to school... ;)

I've been thrown in the water before which makes me think...if there's a Burmese Round Up in the Everglades and you're there Nate...I'm staying home

If you were to be killed by a snake, it would only serve to further ruin the publics opinion about herps. If i can make people forget about things like that, and maybe focus on the shark laser beam issue thats been building, then ill be doing this hobby a great service.

Seriously, I had to change my iHerp and email settings just to avoid the deluge of another 80 "A new comment has been posted on iHerp Answers" notices, the last half of which were mostly pointless banter anyway!  Geez.

I'm at Starbucks trying to study cestodes.  As if I'm not ADD enough WITHOUT my email buzzing every 4 seconds to plant another little "sharks with laser guns" thought seed in my fertile little brain...

I think a calender idea would be great. To have a 12 shot series for the months, with a break down somewhere along the lines of 6 months on the basis of species; snakes"could even do boas pythons colubrids", turtles, chameleons, agamids, monitors...ect, then do the other six months on themes, such as; feeding, tongue shots, goofy behavior, holiday theme, up close skin, eye shots, enclosures, ect... It would be cool if suggestions on species and then themes were put up by members then put up seperate options in those two categories to vote on. The top 6 in both areas are then picked and people submit photos for each one, people vote and we have our 12 winners, and from there put together a calender! ....just an idea.....

I think a collage would ne a good idea. So many members have diverse and equally beautiful collections. It would be great to showcase everything as opposed to showing just one animal.

Man does that boy have incredible talent when it comes to photography.  He has this awesome macro shot of his snow corn for the month of December.
