vets can usually get a good estimate, sooo if anything you might want to inquire to one how they go about determining that...sorry i know thats not very helpful

Has anyone ever thought to just ask the snake?

I wouldn't give a vet that much credit at all!

I'm studying in a program that doubles as PreVet and I see way too many of tomorrow's vets every day to think that they know very much about the specifics of determining the age of a reptile.  The big buzz about "exotics" is that the few who are even interested in learning get taught to probe to sex snakes in one or two sessions of a class in Vet School here.  Granted, there are plenty of other vet programs in the country, but very few have decent exotics programs.

Accurate measurements of length & weight, along with knowing the animal's gender will help most... but depending on the quality of the husbandry it received before you got it, you could see a wide variation in size for its age.
