Q:

My ball pythons have locked several times. I have a question about feeding now.
|
|
Does anyone have any preference or advice on separating the male and female and feeding the male after they have locked up a few times? I got my male a nice rat but I dont know if I should leave him in there for another day or go ahead and put him into his cage and feed him and return him back to her in a few days or what? I just wanna know if they should be separated now that they have been locking for a few days.... Please help me out. First time breeder!

and usually it's the male who fasts, but my female IJ fasted when I bred them and my male did not. definitely separate to feed and give a few days to digest - only time I've ever had a regurge, I had separated a pair to feed and put them back together later that night. the male regurged the next morning :( this always worked fine with my IJs, but not with my Savus. after that I always gave a good 3 days after feeding and they were fine.

I agree, 3 days on, 3 days off and try to feed once a week, but don't be worried if they don't eat, sometimes they refuse during breeding season.

as everyone has said, 3 in 3 out. Feed as needed. Normally, I would thaw two rats since I had two snakes; breeding season though, I will only thaw one for that pair. Sometimes the male will eat, sometimes he won't. Sometimes the female eats, sometimes she doesnt. My females are PIGS though and eat all the way up until they lay. My males start to fast in November. It is normal :) and congrats on the locking!

i always offer on a regular schedule. to both males and females. my females seem to fast first, then late in the season (marchish) my males seem to decide it's time to fast. i still offer to anyone who might eat. i start with my least likely to eat, then move up to the ones who usually always take food. that seems to help with saving rats from being wasted. the more you get to know your snakes, the better you will be able to judge. time is the best teacher.

I return the male to his own cage, wait one day, and then offer food. Sometimes he eats, often he doesn't. One more day, and he's back to work. :)
