Q:

is there any way to sex a carpet without probing?
|
|
so, I've been going on this premis that Sugar Cane is a male because that's that they told me when I purchased him... Only I don't think he has ever shed plugs... and I was just looking at pics of "him" when I thought he was particularly "fat"... could that have been ovulation? Is my boy really a girl? I never really thought to palpate for follicles. Is there any way to tell without having to probe? I really don't trust myself to be able to safely do that...

Size can be an indicator when they're adults- but generally the only surefire way to sex is by probe. If you're very familiar with gender behavior you could possibly make some guesses... again though, probing is the only guarantee.

People who are really well experienced with a particular species or Genus do often develop a visual "feel" for detecting the gender of an animal (at least once it reaches breeding age), so yes, it is possible... but I'll echo that probing is the best method to actually figure out an answer. I am out of practice now, but when I was growing up, I swear I could look at any species of North American rat snake (adult) and figure out its gender... best not to ask me to do any such thing these days. :)
Breeding is the only actual hands-down defining method for detecting the gender of a snake though; probing, popping, palpating, and looking for outward physical cues are all viable methods, but they can suffer from human error. I do NOT advocate breeding animals just because you have them, though.

there are no visual references for sexing carpets. without probing, the only way to be certain is to put him with a confirmed male - observed! - and watch for combat.

well then, guess Sugar Cane will just have to be comfortable with being referred to as male, even if he's not. I have no real breeding plans for him, nor do I intend to develop any. I'll eventually have to learn to probe for my jungle, but that is quite a ways off. Thanks all!

eh, I had a vet tell me Henry was probably Henrietta, and ask if I wanted to probe him during the visit. I didn't; he'll never breed, so who cares?
the gender identity confusion doesn't seem to bother him much :)

haha! I had to give the most points to Shannon for the boobs... Everyone else was great also, but I don't feel like trying to figure out the division of points for anything more complicated than 15 each... sorry all. Thanks for the advice tho ;) (felt like I was playing Apples to Apples with this question pointage)
