Is it true a royal python needs a heat lamp when it gets older?

Under tank heaters are way more preferable and hooked up to a thermostat to regulate the temp. The warm side of the enclosure should be between 89 - 92 F and the cool side should be 77 - 80 F.

Heat lamps will dry out the enclosure and lead to shedding problems.

What type of enclosure is it gonna be housed in?

The age of the snake has nothing to do with its temperature requirements; both hatchling and adult ball pythons need a hot spot of 88-92F and a cool side of 77-80F for proper digestion. Depending on your local climate (humid? dry? cold? hot?) and your enclosure (aquarium? rack system? custom-built?) a heat lamp may be appropriate. No matter what heat source you use, the best way to maintain proper temperatures is with a good thermostat. Best of luck!
