Q: Ornate monitor burrowed constantly
Posted By:

Hey everyone, so my 7 month old Ornate monitor has beeb burrowed 24/7 since I increased his substrate from 12 inches to over 18 probably closer to 20 inches. I also noticed he started hiding more after a person coming to buy a snake decided to pick him up forcefully before I could even react.

How do I get him to come out more? I have a very hands off approach so I know Im not scaring him into hiding. The front of his cage is covered and I have a tone of fake plants and some cork bark rounds on the way so hoping that will help him knowing there are more hiding spots on the surface.

He still eats every night. I put a rat pup and 2 lake smelt in a bowl with some egg. Occaisionally I add repashy calcium plus.

So its not really a health issue as hes very healthy but at the same time I want him to be out more, be more bold which will provide more opprotunities for interaction to help "tame" him in a proper manner without force handling etc

Last thing, his grow out enclosure is 6 feet long, 4 feet wide and 32 inches tall. Basking spot is 130 - 140f, hot side is 92 to 94f, mid cage is 86 to 88f, cool side is 83 to 85f. The enclosure has a bunch of branches drilled in to provide safe climbing and a swimming area

Any thoughts/advice about his hiding habit are greatly appreciated. I want to work towards socializing him iimmediately.

I have no actual monitor experience, but one thought that came to my mind is wondering if the hides on the surface were snug enough fitting for him to feel safe in. How long has he been in this set up as it is? Does he just need more time?

Hes been in the set up for 8 months and has plenty of small medium and large hides. Hes just as grumpy character I guess
