Field herping with the RHS (Reno Herpetological Society)

Posted by Beatrices Reptiles at 5/22/2013 3:14:34 PM

We had a great time this past Sunday. The weather was perfect and we ended up coming across 3 Rattlesnakes, 1 Striped Whipsnake and lots of lizards.

Yes Aimee, this is from the same trip. I'm advisor and volunteer photographer for the RHS, took all those pictures.

Nice finds and beautiful photos. Are those lutosus out that way?

Thanks Joe. Yes, we came across 3 of them. I spotted the first one only about 1/4 mile uphill from the housing trackt we started out at. My daughter (she's 11) came across one on her lizard hunt, but she was too busy to tell anyone. This is the first time I've seen them since I've moved to Reno 2 years ago - guess you just have to know where to find them. Coming from the rainy Oregon coast, we used to find more amphibians and garter snakes. It was a blast out there!

Hi Shannin - join us for our upcoming meeting next Tuesday! We'll have another field trip in June, this way you can meet everyone. This months guest speaker is Bill Love. Go to the RHS facebook page for more info and directions, meeting starts with a potluck at 6:00 pm, then junior presentation at 6:30, Bill Love will take the floor at 7:00 pm. We'd love to have you there!

Thanks! My daughter (Beatrice) is what got the whole thing started. I can't wait to meet Bill Love, going to get some great pointers on photography!

I love it :-) My 8 yr old daughter is a little adventurer too. It's a great way to spend time with the kids outdoors, especially since many kids these days spend way too much time inside. And yeah, Bill Loves photography makes mine look like I was shooting drunk with my daughters hello kitty camera. You'll have to let us know how his talk goes. Thanks for sharing

Lol, I know what you mean, Joe. My "close-ups" of the snakes are done with just a basic lens. Not like I can just stick my camera into their face! Equipment makes a huge difference, but at least I can get pointers on what lens to save up for. I started with an old Nikon D60 and actually had an author in Europe wanting to use some of my action pics for a new poodle book, but the resolution wasn't high enough to convert most of them to print. They did choose a couple.

Thanks!  I got the email from Justin... I have been a "member" since October.. yet, have never made it to a meeting due to work schedules/kids/vehicles... always something.  I work in Reno, now.  So, I'm really hoping to make it this week!

Hope to see you there, Shannin. I'll be the one with the camera in hand and beardie on my shoulder!
