Getting Started

Posted by teghanls at 11/8/2017 1:02:20 AM

Well, my husband said I needed a new hobby; so here I am!  I grew up on a farm with 20+ animals to care for.  When I graduated and moved off to college, all my farm animals had to go.  This has left a HUGE gap for me.  I started looking into different pet options (I have two dogs), and eventually stumbled across the Kenyan Sand Boa.  After a week of pretty extensive research, I decided it was definitely the beginner snake I wanted.  I've never owned reptiles, though I think I've owned just about everything else you can, so this is a very new experience for me!

My female Kenyan Sand Boa ships early next week and should be here Tuesday!  To prepare for her, I've already set up her entire enclosure and purchased everything I need.  Currently, I have a 10 gallon tank, I know I might need to upgrade the bigger she gets.  I'm using aspen bedding because a vast majority of sand boa owners recommended this.  I have a very small water dish and a vented screen top to keep the humidity down and my snake hydrated.  A heat pad is going under one side of the tank, I bought a thermostat to automatically regulate the temperature to ensure she doesn't get burned.  Lastly, I think, I ordered frozen pinky mice.  She has been raised on frozen.

Overall, I feel extremely prepared and overly excited to meet my new family member!  Now I just need to settle on a name. Smile

Nice! Sounds like you've researched well. I especially liked reading that you got a thermostat. :) So many people don't realize how important they are.

How old is she?

You will be so happy with her! I've switched to the sand boas because they are so cute :)

Congrats on the new addition. KSB’s are awesome animals. Watch though, you’ll find reptiles are addictive lol ; )
