Welcome to the House of Doom !

Posted by Michael at 2/19/2012 8:59:47 PM

Well I finished this phase of my snake room remodel ,so I am  going to show it off to all of My iherp friends .. Well here in the new  part of my snake room , as I said in my earlier post  I was able to find  custom ordered  shelves at restaurant depot . to get the most  out of the space i have to work with ,,. Enjoy !    Doom

Rack 1   is  Nine 18'x18" exo terra   cubes   with  30 watt heat panels  I plan on puting tubs on the bottom shelf.

Rack two  is Six  24" x 18" x18" exo terras with 35 watt heat panels  I replaced the screen tops  with 1/4" HDPE  sheet and drilled holes for air flow  and attatched the panels with wood screws

The Cages are  all controled by proportional T stat's   with  an analog  on off T stat 's as a back up stat

I piggy back 3 cages on each Thermostat set .. I plug the proportional Stat  into the "On off" stat  , and  Run the probe  from the proportional stat  in the first cage  on the string  ..and have the probe  of the "on off" stat  in the second cage .. I let the cages  get to temp  then  turn down the "on off "stat  till it shuts off the string , then bump it up 2 degrees . reseting the main . If the Main fails and runs away  the  "on off" stat  will shut down the set and reset the proportional stat ..It's a cheap insurance policy to protect your animals ..

Nice! It looks fabulous! Did you use fabric for the backgrounds?

Love the built-in paper towel holders too ;)

Looks Great Doom! I was wondering why you had the long poles in the picks that I saw on MVF. Now I understand... Paper Towel holders. Great idea!!! You can never have enough paper towels :)

Michael ,
Posted At: 2/20/2012 12:35:19 AM

Thanks  everybody ... Tad  the poles come in a variety of lengths  those where the closest to the size I needed  I was just lucky that I had enough room to fit the towel rolls on them  It was luck  not a plan  ! Hey  sometimes  things go your way  ..

Paul White,

I kind of want to do something similar to this, but no one makes 40 breeder ish sized tanks with that setup that I've found :( Very sad and frustrating

Michael ,
Posted At: 2/20/2012 12:53:42 AM

Paul Exo tera  makes  a 36" tank like that  and I was told  they are coming out with 12" tall Terrestrial tanks as well

Paul White,
Posted At: 2/20/2012 12:56:55 AM

Yeah, I did see that while browsing shortly after that comment. But sadly, LLL says it's local in store pickup only :(  Our pet chains carry the smaller ones.
The terrestrial tanks are cool. I mean, I mostly use stackable animal plastics and stuff but having some more display type tanks for my smaller animals is appealing.

Bet that feels good to take a step back and look at!  Very nice!  : )

Gorgeous set up!!

Paul-- You might try checking Petsmart--the one where I live has started carrying the 36x18x18" model Exo-Terra. Otherwise, you might check with local stores to see if any of them can special order them for you?

Paul White,
Posted At: 2/20/2012 1:13:25 AM

Ours doesn't--they only stock the tall ones (at least that I've ever seen). I've inquired about special ordering stuff before and they frankly weren't very helpful (although they just got a new manager, a guy I worked for back in college--maybe he can help?).

Michael ,

Paul this place ships free  and has  good prices

Looks awesome! You've got a great set-up going! I'm super jealous. I have a couple of those Exo Terra cubes and love them! Also those metal shelves from the restaurant stores are a life saver! I'd be such a mess without them.

Dave Pierson,

That is a great idea with the backup t-stat.  I'm writing that down into my book of tricks.

That is the coolest reptile room, snake sanctuary or chondro chamber I've ever seen! Totally stoked for you - I'd keep having to go in there just to look at it and grin if it was mine

Jennifer White,

I need to rethink my Freedom Breeder rack heating system here and its just driving me nuts!

So... do they just hang there like that all day? ... must be exhausting. lol.

Would you care to share some photos of chondros that AREN'T all bunched up and tangled together with themselves? I rarely ever see any action photos of them...

Michael ,

Wow a sticky  on my set up  I'm Honored Sticky God !!

Thanks for all the wonderful comments  everybody.. I was messaging  Tad last Nght he used me as an example  of keeping in non PVC cages  and i was honored.  and I said  yeah I could have got some sweet chondro's  but I decided to provide better for the ones I have first  .. I'm Glad I did !

This set up was in the works for a long time . I have been collecting parts  and planing  for a while .. I did the math  last Night and it was staggering !! But if you take baby steps  and Plan  and buy whet you can, when you can.  You can provide for your animals  In a way they deserve ..  Yes it looks great  .. But,, It works great  thats even better .. Now I'm off to clean up the mess  I made in the rest of te room ..  Thanks again for the kind words ..

Lindsey  they  are vampires  thay Hunt at night  its like a whole different world in there after dark  I will try to get some pics  Under my red lamp and see if i can  change your Mind ..  there are lots of pics in my profile  of awake chondro's also

Anna Sitarski,

beautiful! You did a great job! And yeah liek you were saying just a little at a time. They will be fine in tus or cheaper enclosures and you slowly build up buy piece at a time. I have some old tanks coming in this week I will be converting and so forth. Exciting stuff. That is one awesome room!

@ Steven Shook, honestly they aren't hard at all as long their requirements are met. Long ago they was considered an experienced keeper species. Now that we have solid captive bred and born babies from many breeders and hobbyist alike. All the older regimens to keep them have been debunked ask anyone here who has them or The great people of

Dave Pierson,

Mike, that room is awesome!  I have a question for you as a novice at chondros.  Do you think there is any difference in husbandry, health, behavior, etc...  in housing in all glass as compared to the darkened sides as with the pvc?  I'm debating permenant enclosure options for my first chondro i got a few weeks ago.  And I guess for the second too, since he'll be here tomorrow.  And personally I like the look of the all glass exo types.

Love it! Badass set-up! The paper towel idea is great!

Michael ,
Posted At: 2/21/2012 6:43:13 PM

Dave , Most of my babies  have been stared in File tubs  and then into my Doom cubes  I made ..( you can see them on my page ) .I  wound up getting  a few Exo's  and  used them since i had them  on hand and I liked them .. I have a few PVC cages also  and to be homest  there so Gloomy .. you need to have a light in every cage  and there is so much border around the door's they take away from the purpose of having a beutiful animal .. Last week I basicaly swiched  almost every chondro  I own into a new enclosure  some  into bigger  Exo's  some into an Exo for the first time .. Not 1 animal skipped a meal .. My cages are in a "snake room "  so not to much traffic.. I try to provide  cover for the snake to get Cozy  if he wants ..  I could have got any cages I wanted  or built some for that fact  but I  like the exo terra's  they look good  there easy to clean I like the locks on the doors , and if you shop around  and make a connection  you can get them pretty afordably.  and I light every cage with 1 sole light bulb  what a concept !!  Welcome to the world of the Wallet sucking Green vampire snake   .. Hit me up any time  if you have a question  ..
