Anxiety over not eating

Posted by Matt Nelson at 3/3/2012 10:09:26 AM

So my two newest additions are statring to give me minor anxiety for no reason. My pastel, Jericho hasn't eaten in quite awhile but he is also in breeding mode so I understand why he is not eating.

Then there is my new normal male. He is also not eating but at only 180 grams he deff isnt in breeding mode. Im think he is just still acclimating to the new surrounding.

On the other hand my normal female, Imber is eating like a pig!!! Rats or mice, frozen or live, doesnt matter she will go crazy on food!!!! She is deff going to be a fat girl!!!

Take it from the original definition of neurotic, it is probably OK for the two guys.  Ball pythons bug the piss out of you because they just won't eat sometimes.

How's your setup, temperature-wise, humidity-wise, etc?

Have the two guys lost mass?

Nine times out of ten, it's fine.  But keep an eye on them and continue to offer.  Best of luck!

Don't worry...something must have shifted in the atmosphere or something.  My adult male BP is in his 6th week I think of refusal and my female, who has very rarely gone more than 8-10 days is now in her 4th week.  If your temps and humidity are good and they are not loosing weight or dehydrating then I would just offer food every 7ish days, they will eat when they get hungry enough.

Well temps are mid to high 80's and humidity sits around 55-65%. So those are good. No loss of mass, no dehydration ect ect. I keep offering food once a week. I am sure the pastel is because he is still in breeding mode and the normal male is due the the complete change in location, going from tub to tank ect. So in the end I think they will be just fine, just worry about my guys. i know everything will be good though!!

You have the current weight for reference which is great... I wouldn't worry unless he started dropping weight. Also, what prey size are you offering? Sometimes dropping a size down works... for whatever reason, they could think it's too big for them....even though we know better - LOL

I deff tried to size of prey smaller. Went from small adult mouse to hopper for the little guy and a rat pup from a small rat for my big pastel. Now my pastel was primarily on  African soft fured rats, which might be a good reason he wont take the normal rats. I was hoping to be able to break the ASF habit tho...

I don't worry too much unless they are losing weight, I find the anxiety is just not worth it.  If you want though you can try braining or chicken broth, that sometimes gets their feeding response going.
