Ugh, I HATE HATE HATE it when people abuse their animals, especially when they abuse them and try to pass them off as fine. I was browsing Craigslist the other day(bad habit, I know) and I came across an add for two leopard geckos, male and female. I haven't had leos in a while but was thinking to get back into owning a few, and these were only $50 for adults, so I emailed the guy for pics and THIS is what he sent me.....

After crying for about an hour on the condition of the animals, I finally got the guts to email him back and sent about two pages worth of lecture on how he's crap, he treats his animals like crap, and he shouldn't be allowed to own leos, much less sell them. I realized later that I probably shouldn't have done that if I was going to have a chance of rescuing them. Now he won't email me back, I'm furious, sad, and a little sick about this whole mess....

Anyway, I just wanted to rant about that. I emailed him on a different email to see if I can manage to get him to drop the price a little. I'd at least like to give the female a chance at happiness even if she can't be saved(her eyes look to have completely deteriorated in the pic and who knows when that was taken.... :( ). So we'll have to see how things go with this, I'll be sure to keep you updated.

That really is sad JoAnne. I have seen so many sad and abused animals on craigslist. Good luck.

The herps aren't usually that bad(abuse wise) in orlando's craigslist, but that's mainly because there usually aren't any. It's just that when there are, they're in HORRIBLE condition, not just bad. :(

Good luck JoAnne, that's just rough!  :(  It's really hard to not give in to your heart and tell people like that just what you think.  I've heard of many people operating formal reptile rescues saying much the same thing.  Definitely keep us updated.

Here is the sad!

You need to leave the [IMG] off each end, click the icon of the mountain in the toolbar, and paste the picture there.

Ah, sorry. With the other site I'm on you have to put the [img] tags.

That's terrible. I'd post his email up so all of us can email him telling him to get that thing to a vet, or a reptile rescue. Even a child could look at that poor thing and know it isn't healthy.

Did he respond to the other e-mail?! this is just wrong! What about like a animal control type officer or a cousin in the mob perhaps?

Posted At: 12/23/2009 4:29:10 PM
He hasn't responded. I will definitely post his email.
Feel free to scream your brains out at him. I'm going to try emailing him again on ANOTHER email right now. Maybe one of us can get through to him....

I never really thought about it but people that don't know how to take care of their animals and can't do a simple google search sorta are abusing them. At what point do you stop and realize that the animal you have looks nothing like it did when you first got it? Ugh disgusting, its not rocket science either. There's just no excuse for it there's millions of free websites on care and even sites like this with people that have no problem answering a few simple questions if you just take the time out of your life to ask.

At least you can say they're doing the right thing in trying to get rid of them since they don't want to take care of them anymore.

yeah, with the internet at hand, there really is no excuse.

Leiren ,

yeah indeed! None of those "reptiles are too complicated and hard,I cant afford to feed them/buy proper heating pads" or "i didnt know i wasnt supose to do that, the person i got them from told me to" excuse. Should of thought about it before you even invested in buying them. Half the people on Craigslist don't even know what species they have as a pet. Some people just need to stick with their boring dogs as pets and nothing but that.

any body down with a good old fashion beat down?

I definitely agree. I can't even count how many "Pythons for sale" ads I've seen where I've asked what type and they've said, "It's a python...that's all I know." I've actually had one person ARGUE with me because "Her son told her it was a Python Boa" and they know their stuff.

I messaged the guy on a new email asking if he still had them. He said
"Yes and I'd be willing to sell them to you for $50"
.....some people never learn.

haha just cause you pay that much for a cheap animal in a petstore doesn't mean you've exactly gotten a deal. I wouldn't pay $1 for either for them. If he tries to argue with you more just send him this entire post thread and be like "gee about other 7 people agree you don't know muckluck and that you're letting your muckluckty animals die".

I can kinda relate cause about a week ago I was talking to this chick about a milksnake from craigslist and she wanted the 20 gallon cage, heating pad, water dish, and snake for $100. She kept telling me how massive the milksnake was and the picture she had up of it was just like a baby but she told me it was 3 years old. I asked her for more pictures and she sent it to me and the thing had ONE eye and was not even the size of my yearling sinaloan milk.

I told her i'd go $50 since it was a nice cage and figured I could get the snake back in health and trade it off for something and she jumped me telling me she was trying to rip her off and no deal. So much for that! hahaha.

Well, he finally answered on my other email and is considering trading with me. At this point I don't really care if he takes things I don't use anymore. I offered him an Exo terra breeding box(won in a raffle, I have 2 more), a heat cable(never use it), a guitar tuner(I have 2 others), or books. I just want to get that female out of there and see if it's even possible to save her at this point.

Good on you, let us know how it goes... and try to avoid telling him what you think of him until you have the geckos in hand!!  :)   (like maybe when the deal is done & you're walking out the door)

Posted At: 12/24/2009 1:30:28 AM
Haha, don't worry. I'll DEFINITELY be sharing my opinion of him....again....

Leiren ,

haha trading seems to work too! I'd just keep in mind though as bad as the male looks, even though the female looks okay she still probably has some issues too even if you do get her out of the trade. The male still looks like to me you could still save him,it looks just like a terrrrriiibbble case of bad shed. Maybe a lonnnng nice warm bath for a few days would make him feel a whole lot better and get him back in shape.

Ugh they're also on sand,I remember when my first leopard I ever got was impacted cause of it. hatehatehate. Good luck to you though,I really do have respect for people who still continue to rescue reptiles even though its not recommended to by others :) I still try if I can even though i've had alot of sick pets die on me in the process of treating them. I can't say i've ever learned my "lesson" by still doing it over and over again, but I sitll feel better knowing I tried the best I could and that in their last days someone actually gave a muckluck about them.

WTF at my keyboard, engrish times 2. Santa plz make Dell laptops less muckluckty as my Christmas present tomorrow!

Posted At: 12/24/2009 1:05:52 PM
Lol don't worry, I could read what you said. :P

It's actually the female that's messed up though. I'm guessing most of it is probably from being over bred, but I'll hope it's shed. That at least makes things a little easier for me. This would actually only be my second rescue, so I'm really digging into care sheets, vet books, ect on this.

The last herp I rescued was a baby iguana with severe MBD. He actually belonged to someone I USED to be good friends with, I convinced him to give up the ig to me, I nursed it almost back to full health, and then he said if I didn't return it he was going to call the police.... Needless to say, that rescue didn't end well.....

hahaha you should of  told him to call the police and showed him the vet bills and pictures of what he looked liked when you first got him.  Briiiing it. How would he of even proved it was his? haha

That picture just breaks my heart. :( Good luck to you, and yes, keep us posted PLEASE!

I did actually report him to animal control, the one with the iguana. Around here they don't really care. The told me, "It's his pet, he'll do what he wants with it." :(

Gladys, no reply yet. I'll keep you updated though.

yeah ugh, smaller pets they all just view as "throw aways" to begin with, unless its a cat or dog they don't really give a muckluck. It's typical. I've reported the petstore here several times for bagging betta fish in bags and just leaving them in the fish bags on the table until they dried out and were thrown away and didnt sell, but basically im sure they didn't even go check it out. I hate it.

But yes keep us updated!
