WTF?!
My boyfriend and I bought this freaking sweet waterbowl for our snake, made by exo terra. It looked like a rock, and I was thinking, FINALLY something sweet for my snakies, right now everything in his cage has been fashoined out of stuff.
ANYWHO!!
he poohed near it so we had to clean it, and as joe was cleaning it the puddinging paint was coming off!! it had been coming off the entire time, my snake was BASKING in water paint!! I was furious! It smelt like paint too! WHY the hell would you put paint that could come off onto a waterbowl for REPTILES!!!!
d bags. It may not even have been toxic but I'm still furious. the paint was just coming right off! :( GRRR..
so dont get those bowls. the big ones that look like rocks.

WOW. That sucks! I normally am OK with their products too. I'm sorry for the bad experience.

That's why I stick to ceramic dog bowls and tupperware containers. :3

Bleh. Yeah. I had a similar experience, only I don't think my dish was exo-terra brand. Good, safe "faux rock" dishes are so ridiculously few and far between... It really is so much easier to just get a pretty dog or cat bowl and disguise it in the substrate. =P

A friend of mine is having the same issue right now. I prefer to use ceramic bowls from the dollar store. Cheap and they hold up really well. Not exactly pretty to look at, but it helps out in the long run when you're spending $5-10 for a dish that you end up throwing away.

Yup I agree with justyne I use the ceramic water bowels a bit pricey but worth in in the long run:)

Sometimes you can find these ceramic bowls at wal-mart, target, and even petsmart dirt cheap if they are on sale. Usually the bowls are ugly (I have one that's pink with puke green leaves painted on it) but your snakes could give a crap about that. ;) lol

Zerbra one and two green ones with paw prints on it: )lol for my bigger guys got the big plastic dog bowels for them LOL I spent 50 bucks on more water bowels in pet smart the guy said oh u got a lot of cats or dogs? ....I said nope just 17 snakes LOL I got the deer caught in head lights look after that lol

I love that deer in the head lights look, we get it almost every time we go and buy 5 bags of dog food at a time to feed the rodents. Some one inevitably says "wow, you must have a lot of dogs" and I say "no, we don't have any" it either ends there with a weird look or they go ahead and ask what it is for...rodents! It is then that the conversation gets interesting. "Oh, you breed rodents...for pets?" "nope, snake food" (this is usually where the deer look comes in) " What do you do with the snakes?"" Breed them!" Lol, I love the looks and weird questions but every so often I run into someone who is a reptile person and they are excited by the idea.

Ikea ceramic dog bowls. Best value in snake bowls ever. Something like $4 for two good sized bowls.

I like ceramic but I also like those heavy plastic crock pet bowls. I have some of those fake rock dishes too but none of mine have any paint on them...I wonder if they are either so old its already gone or if there is a newer style that they tried paint on and its not working (obviously) I hunt at Goodwill, Dollar stores and Garage sales for sturdy cheap ceramics and have gotten lucky with a couple herp club sales in getting water bottles (for rodents) and snake dishes and those itty bitty ceramics that are good for repashy and calcium licks.

Man after my first and still only mite infestation I went a little crazy removing just about every textured surface from my collection, and rebaking and spraying those few I wanted to keep.  I ordered enough bowls and heavy plastic planter saucers online (Horselovers.com was very good, especially when you catch them on a discount day or order enough for free shipping) so that I have 2x as many as I have cages, so I just switch them out weekly for a soak and spray.  The cages are all lined with paper, all substrate contained in my flying-saucer hides.  I'll probably donate all my old heavy molded water and feed bowls to our monthly auction table at the society meetings.

Ceramic, ceramic, ceramic!  :D  So dittos to almost everyone above!  :)

Julie, thanks for the tip about Ikea!!  I have yet to set foot into one of those stores... now I have a good incentive!

btw, one thing I have discovered for cleaning snake bowls that really reduces scrubbing time: soak the rinsed bowl in full-strength vinegar (I get the gallon bottles of white vinegar for cheap from the grocery store)... it breaks down a lot of the gunk that would otherwise require 'elbow grease,' though poop may still take some effort.  I'm all about NOT doing much work if I don't have to.  :)

Shelboa - We ran a rodent resuce for quite some time (hey, an animal is an animal). Doing this, we have accumulated many pet rats and mice. The funny thing is, we always get the exact opposite when we buy dog food for the rats and mice. "You got a lot of dogs?" "Just two, and they don't eat this food. This is for our rats and mice." "Oh, you breed them for snake food or something?" "No, they are our pets, our snakes eat F/T" *deer in headlights look*

Then, someone asks the stupid questions:

How do you keep them from breeding?
(Uhmm...seperate cages...duh)

How do you keep the snakes from eating them?
(Why do people think that we just let our animals free roam in some twisted naturalistic view of animal care?)

Why would you feed your snakes frozen stuff? I thought they saw heat only?
(*smacks head*)

and...my favorite...

So, does that mean you have a bunch of dead, frozen rats in your freezer?
(Yup, right next to the chicken!)

As far as the bowls go, haven't had any problems with paint coming off, and we use them for one of the bredlis, the corn snake, and the tegu. We got them donated a lot to us when we did resuce, and are getting some more tomorrow. That being said, I prefer to use the plastic water dishes that have the little spaces underneath them, like this:

They double as hides as well as water dishes!!!

I don't think I could do pet rodents any more. After having such a large colony of rats and mice and also having gerbils ASF's and for a while we even had spiny mice...um yeah. Rodents are disgusting cannibalistic heathens with no understandable purpose other than as a food source. Mostly...most of them...excpet that really cute one with silky hair and the spot over its eye. WHAT!
