Poe's Necropsy results...

Posted by Tasia Larsen at 8/8/2011 4:44:20 PM

Some of you may have read about Poe, my female ball that I had to put down. I have been waiting for the necropsy results and got them today.

The vet said that she had very large blood clots in her spinal column, as well as large one in her aorta that went  down to her kidneys. There were also small blood clots in her brain that caused the neurological damage.

When I asked what caused these, the vet told me that only severe trauma would have caused this, and they do not think that egg laying would have done it. This makes me feel very confused as of how she would have gone through so much trauma. We never dropped her, she never fell, never used a snake hook to move her, never squished her in the rack. She never escaped or anything. She was eating healthily a week before the symptoms... What the heck could have caused her trauma????

This makes me sad to think about, I really miss her. But at least I know now that it was not IBD, but the loss still tugs on my heart. :(

That is really strange. Maybe she had some blood issue that caused severe clotting? I know some people have clot issues - don't see why a snake couldn't either. Other than that I have no idea. It sucks you lost her - but at least you can rest easy knowing whatever it was, isn't contagious!

This is a sad situation.... you lost your pet, and that's awful.... it's never easy to lose a snake :( but at least now you know it's not going to claim the lives of your other animals and you can relax. I bet you were glad to hear the rest of your snakes are safe! You didn't do anything wrong, in fact you did the best thing by having the necro done. Now you will not have to live in fear... I am happy things turned out better for you, in that aspect!
