Winkle would sometimes hiss like that when he was younger. The tail-buzzing lasted longer than the hissing, but that wore off too. They know who feeds 'em, plus he was the only snake who I made a point of keeping his cage out in the living room where he could sneak around and spy and get used to me. Give your guy a lot of partial cover, to give him that "I can see you but don't think you can see me" feeling, and he'll settle. I can get away with using ferret tubes, because Winkle is completely consistant about only pooping inside his warm-side hide box (that's the only thing he goes in there for, actually) but otherwise stick with disposeable stuff. Lightly woven upside-down wicker dollar-store breadbaskets that they can see through, for example, or regular hide boxes that are positioned so that he can peek at the doorway to see the couch where people are hanging out. They're extremely curious, so once they edge is taken off their fear you can pretty much count on them popping out to investigate you whenever you reach into the cage. At least while the lights are on. At night, they usually want to just stay put and sleep, but during the day there's a lot of personality there to work with. I used to keep northern pines... once I got drawn back into herp-keeping it was pretty much a given I'd end up with another Pit.
