Future of iHerp

Posted by Thomas at 2/25/2021 10:08:11 AM

For the years that I've been on iHerp, I have really enjoyed both the tracking features as well as the community on here. Unfortunately, Facebook seems to have sunk many of the previously popular forums, and that effect has been felt here on iHerp as well. We used to have lots of blogs and new members asking questions, which hardly ever happens now.

With significantly reduced traffic, unanswered support tickets, and spammers just having their way with blog posts, I cannot help but wonder whether this site is going to continue to stay up. I have a significant amount of maintenance data stored here, so I feel rather invested in this site. Does anyone have any insight as to what the plans are for iHerp?

I'm still here everyday but I agree Facebook has sucked the soul out of a lot of online communities and forums. I left the cesspool that is FB years ago and have never looked back. In fact, my life became even better without it.

As for the future of iHerp? I have no idea. Places like this are only as good as the community involvment..............

I love this site, tracking is very useful! I'm also part of a local group on Facebook, but I like it here too!

Hey Thomas! Yes, I have been wondering the same thing.

Hey Bethany! Great to see you're still around! I love seeing all those friendly faces on here from years back (George, Sonja, etc.)! Looks like your gecko collection has grown quite a bit!

I have never been on facebook or instagram, but from what people tell me, I'm not missing much and I'm better off without it. : )

I would be lost without the tracking features of iHerp, though! I know without a doubt it has helped me be a better keeper. I access both more current tracking, as well as looking back at trends in behavior from previous years. It has also been helpful for tracking breeding activity and growth rate of youngsters, and I have been able to help customers with questions about growth or feeder size by accessing the  tracking of ones that have grown up here.

I have nearly 13 years of tracking of countless animals here on iHerp. I definitely hope the site doesn't go anywhere. I know Aaron wanted have the site be free. I hope that he'd be willing to accept a subscription fee or sell access to the software before eliminating iHerp. Obviously, a lot of work went into the development of the site and all, and although we all miss the fun times of the past, I believe there is still great purpose for the site as it is and I have no plans to go anywhere.

I wonder if it would help if some of us took on some more active roles on the site. For example, I would derive great pleasure from monitoring the site for spam accounts and deleting them when they rear their nose rubs. I also wouldn't mind keeping up with the taxonomy in the species section (adding and editing species names), since that is along the lines of my professional expertise anyway. I don't know Aaron personally at all, but if any of you guys have his ear, I'd love to hear some insight about the status of this site from him.

I have a few admin priveleges and I'd gladly take on removing spammer accounts (if I was given that option) so others could focus on things like you mentioned Thomas.

George, that sounds great! Maybe you can come up with a process that we can use to identify and point out scammers, so that you can then remove them as they pop up.

If Aaron needs help with the species list, I'd be happy to tackle that.

I rely on iHerp for my Animals' tracking.  I'm on FB primarily for banjo groups, but do belong to several Kingsnake groups there, though I don't spend a whole lot of time with them.  The only other iHerp member I know of that documented his Kings' records was Herper_Mike, who I met in a FB Kingsnake group - and he was the one that told me about iHerp - but he seems to have gone inactive last I checked.  I'm surprised that more iHerp members don't make use of, or at least publicize, the tracking feature !  I used to post blogs, but they essentially echoed what I document in my tracking.  I hope this forum stays up !

I love this site. I don't use it for daily updates or anything, but important tracking, checking out people's breeding projects, getting photo dumps of adorable snake clutches...

I love this site and have made some of my closest friends through iHerp.  I'd be super sad if it went down and would happily throw some money at Aaron if he needed it to keep the site going.  I really would like to paricipate more, but I always get so busy with stuff that I don't even do much with social media anymore.

I have overs decade of records on iHerp and also hope it stays. I would also contribute to it rather than see it lost.

I also have a lot of tracking on Iherp, though I do a combo of paper records and this where I eventually dump all my paper records into here. I would hate for the site to go down. I'm not on the computer enough to be active here but that's just because I tend to live and do stuff away from computers and phones and all this digital stuff. I may be young but I'm old school like that and would rather talk to people in person than through online sources. So I wouldn't be able to help with anything on the site or be more active in threads, but I am around and lurking when I do my updates.

There's also the fact that I've been shre4dding my paper records for regular tracking stuff after I get themupdated onto here so losing all those years of info if the sitre went down would be horrible for the history on my critters.

this site is invaluable for the tracking and historical data on my collection.

I've tried to refer people here but keep hearing about issues getting approved and they reach out but get no response. I reached out to Aaron myself to try to get help but don't get any response (2 or 3 years now)? so I wasn't even sure if he was still managing it.

I'd hate to see the site go and IF it does, I hope we get a heads up so we can archive the information from over the years.

I stopped referring people here due to the issues I kept hearing about...

When I die, the site will die. So backup your data because it's only a matter of time until I get mowed down by a car on my bike.

There are no current plans to continue development, what we have is what we have. While I had big plans, Facebook really ended up killing off a lot of traffic and revenue opportunities, so I chose to keep everything free. It became clear along the way that it was more and more unlikely I would be able to do this full time, which was a rough and sad realization. But it is what it is.

So I continue to pay almost two grand a year for my hosting services. I don't have the heart to shut it down, but if and when that time comes, I'll of course give ample warning.

FB sucks.

Aaron, what if you created membership dues to help offset the cost? I may not be on here everyday (am fairly frequent) it is an incredibly useful tool for me in keeping records of my lineage, breeding projects,  etc.

I'd be happy to contribute to a membership fund.
