Felt kind of bad for Reyna...

Posted by Sonja K. at 3/12/2012 12:36:22 PM

Reyna is my adult female Eastern Tiger Snake (Telescopus semiannulatus) that I acquired in November of 2011. She is a LTC that had been imported from Tanzinia. She produced in captivity for the previous owner, so she came to me as a proven breeder. I look forward to pairing her with my unrelated male, Rory, when he reaches sufficient size.

This season, she apparently cycled herself, however... Saturday, March 10th, I found 10 slugs strewn throughout her enclosure... I felt bad that all her effort proved to be for not. I snapped a picture of her after I had removed all the cage furnishings... kind of looks like she's pouting in the corner...

Hopefully Rory, CBB in the fall of 2010, will be of size next season and I can facilitate bringing more CBB animals of this amazing species into the world.

First a picture of Reyna:

After I had removed her furnishings:

And lastly, a shot of the slugs she laid...

She is doing well, and took her F/T mouse like a good girl last night.

The poor little thing does appear to be pouting.  Hugs to Reyna, who has a precious face :)

I sure hate it when a girl goes through all that effort and you don't get hatchlings at the end of it :(

she's gorgeous, though!

Oh Sonja how disappointing for oyu and that pretty little girl:(

I hope next year brings a little healthy clutch for her, and you.

I am glad she ate and is doing well though.

The slugs came as a surprise to me.... still trying to figure these Colubrids out... LOL... so I can't be too disappointed, but for all her effort, yes, it would have been nice to have something come from all that. Sure makes me hope that my boy is of size for next year, though.

Awe, poor girl. :(  She's very pretty!

I've had a few females slug out this year, & I swear they were depressed about it for a little while after.

Poor thing, I hope the next season goes a little better for the both of you!

Sonja I've said this befoe, but I really really love those snakes. They are so cool and uncommon in collections. Pity about the slugs but I'm relieved to hear she is doing well. I have a feeling you'll do well with them and get viable clutches in the coming years. You have my sincere best wishes with that

Figured I'd just add a little update here... she laid another 8 slugs last night...

She ate in between the two clutches of slugs, only refusing last weekend. I will offer her a meal this weekend, she looks a little thin, but not bad.

It takes these so long to get some size to them. My male, born Dec. 2010, finally started taking 2 pinkies, and then moved up to a fuzzy mouse his last meal... I wonder if / hope he will be of size for next season...

I have to say, the thought of the possibility of having 18 little Tigers born in about a 2 month time period - while exciting, also seems a bit daunting when I think of what will need to go into getting them established eating... but knowing that is what I could be looking at, I will be prepared for such because I would LOVE to help bring more of these CBB animals into collections.
