Afternoon "Squeelight" - 2013 Rhino Ratsnakes

Posted by Sonja K. at 3/29/2013 3:19:12 PM

The 2013 Rhino Rats are emerging...

I woke this morning to find 2 babies had not only pipped, but had also made it out of their eggs overnight. They did so on day 61; taking 4 days longer than last year. However, I was expecting them to take longer being I had incubated them at a lower temperature this year, around 80F.

I ask, is there anything cuter than a baby snake with its egg tooth, accompanied by a still floppy pointed "nose"?! Laughing

Without further ado... a few pictures:

Waiting on 4 more...

This is their mama, Katana:

LMAO! Well my mom was holding our baby hognose the other day. And she looks at me and goes are you SURE she's not gonna get me??? I was like what do you mean!? Hoggies don't bite, you're fine. She was like no I mean stab me. What? I asked. Then she proceeds to say "well you always said these are rear fanged! Where are they at?" And she proceeds to flip the little snake over and examine her butt area. I about died laughing. All of these years my mom would never hold a hognose because she thought rear fanged meant that they could stab you with some crazy butthole claws.

I will bid on those butthole claws if you put them on ebay.

ROFL Shannon! If it was a boa she was holding, you'd be in a pickle trying to explain that they are spurs and not fangs. Wow, lol!

Thanks everybody!

As an update, the total number of Rhino Rat hatchlings for 2013 will remain at 2. The remaining 4 were not able to make it out of their eggs due to various developmental issues. This was a repeat pairing of last year's which did not result in any with physical abnormalities, so I'm not sure why there was the number of them this year. The only thing I changed was incubating them at a couple degrees cooler - at the room temp. in my reptile building vs in an incubator like I did last year since I needed my incubator for Python eggs this year. I wouldn't think that would be cause for it. The next time I breed her, I will attempt to pair her with a different male, from a different line.

Even though it is sad that they all didn't make it, it is the reality of breeding. I feel fortunate for the two little cuties I got. Two is better than none. (And I'm secretly hoping that one or both are females!)
