Sonja and Sonja's FLAMINGO Encounter at the National Aviary

Posted by Sonja K. at 6/25/2013 12:24:22 PM

I will start off by saying, This experience was AWESOME!

We got to go right down onto the beach of the flamingo's environment for this one.

Flamingos check you out by bumping into you with their chests and a sort of preening / grooming with their bills.

The flamingo's names were Beaker and Sweetums, named after characters in The Muppets.

And in case you wonder, as much as we both would have loved to reach out and pet them, we were requested not to.

Sonja meeting Beaker:

Sweetums next to me and Beaker by Sonja - and this was how it went the majority of the time.

Chatting with Sweetums

We also had the opportunity to feed them. They are filter feeders and sweep their heads back and forth siphoning up the water and then filtering out the food. The water is then expressed from their beaks. It was neat to see this up close. Of course, the expressing of water equated to a bit of flamingo "dribbling" on us.

By the expressions on our faces, I think this encounter brought out the kid in both of us.

And it will become quite obvious how sensitive my neck and ears are... it was goosebumps galore for me! LOL

Sonja's ears may have been a bit ticklish, too.

And then... my expression here was one of wonder... wondering if my dear Sweetums was aiming to get... ummm... more "personal".

And, yes, dear Sweetums did just that!

The lady taking pictures said, Oooh... I best not take a pic of that! At that time Sonja said, Yes! Take it! (Wasn't that nice of her!?) But, the only ones there were of my expression after... (This included the sensation of flamingo "dribble".)

... and then I think Sonja may have wondered if she was next.

Me thinking... Uuuuuh... you've already been there.

They were very interested in things like watches, barretts and wristbands.

Such a cute pic!

Not the ear again!

OMG! Not the other, too!

I believe Sonja found this quite humorous for some reason!

I tried to ask what the obsession was about...

And that resulted in yet another attack on the ears!

There was also talking (honking and other vocalizations) amongst Sweetums and Beaker.

And then we were lucky enough to get a couple "wing salutes"!

If you're ever in Pittsburgh... it's definitely a fun experience - one we'll not forget!

Yea!  What a great blog!  Sure looks like we had fun!  And we did!

I don't have any pics to add to this one since they were all on Sonja's camera.  I've been waiting to see how they came out, and I think they captured the experience quite well.  Thanks, Sonja

I wonder if it would be possible to keep real flamingos on my lawn? My parents have those fake plastic things, but I want real ones.
