More Tarahumaras!

Posted by Andrea at 6/26/2013 5:57:58 PM

This year, I bred my other Tarahumara female, Toci, since she didn't go last year and I wanted babies from her since I got her. I never saw copulation, but that's the norm for my kids, I guess they are shy. So Toci stopped eating and that was my hint. She would still take the rat like she was going to eat it, but never actually ate it. She got nice and round, with her spine as a peak. I had no idea how many babies there were or when she was due. There was no sight of an ovulation and I didn't want to trust the post ovulation shed as my other female shed while gravid last year. I could tell it was getting close though as she was getting huge and heat seeking. To my joy, this past Friday morning, she had company in her tub with her! I got pictures of her with them (last year I totally spaced on that) and moved her out without a hitch.

The out come was good, and very different from last year. Toci had 3 slugs, and 2 under developed babies. It looked like one baby got smooshed or something as it had no deformities and was out of it's sac, but it was dead. The other 10 healthy babies look great! Last year, for those who missed that blog, Chantico (my other female) gave me 14 live, healthy babies- no slugs, no still born, none under developed.

Honestly, I'm glad for a few less babies this year, as I'm short on room. These 10 filled up the last of my rack space.  So here are some more baby pics!

Here are a few photos of the underdeveloped and dead baby,

Okay, now for the size comparison from this litter and last year's litter!! The larger one was born June 27th 2012, where the small one was born June 21 2013. I added a bill in there for some size comparison.

Hope you guys enjoyed the pictures! These little boas always make me smile!
