Craigslist!? Seriously?! What are the chances!?

Posted by Sonja K. at 12/30/2013 9:40:55 AM

This past Friday night I sat down at the computer while my kids were getting ready for bed. I checked for new posts on iHerp, and when there weren't any, for some reason I decided to check the pet section on Craigslist. I have no idea why, because it's not something I do routinely. I found the typical normal BPs, etc. amongst those on the first couple pages. Then, on the third page was an ad entitled,

" Rehoming rare snake +\- professional cage -madagascar tree boa (St. Paul)"

Of course I had to find out just what that ad was about! Could it really be a Sanzinia??? On Craigslist!?

I opened the ad and this is what it said:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rehoming rare snake +\- professional cage -madagascar tree boa (St. Paul)

2013 captive bred male Green Phase Madagascar Tree Boa. These are VERY rare snakes ( not to be confused with the rather common Amazon Tree Boa). When young (mine is pictured below in first 3 photos), they are red in coloration which will change to green with white markings at about 18 months of age (last photo). Adults grow to 6ft in length and tend to be very mellow. Due to financial constraints I have to rehome him. Feeding readily on live fuzzy mice and very friendly. Rehoming fee of 250.00 (firm) to make sure this snake ends up in appropriate hands (though was initially purchased for 650.00). Please do your research on this snake before contacting me. Sorry, no trades will be considered. If you are interested in a cage I will add in a 36" PVC snake cage with sliding glass doors, radiant heat panel, and thermostat for an extra 100.00 ( paid 250.00). Thanks for looking.
(This was one of the pics in the ad.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I then saw it had been posted 18 days ago! Ugh! I figured there was no way it could still be available. Then I noticed it said the ad had just been updated 12 hours before!!!!
I immediately sent an email stating my experience with the species and included my phone number. The person called me about an hour later. We had a fun conversation - he is a vet, and everything he mentioned about where the animal came from, who had produced it and the others he has matched with what I knew to be true. He said he had turned down several inquiries, and that I was even better than he could have hoped for. He said he never imagined finding someone that already kept them and would truly appreciate the species.
Being we both had other commitments for Saturday, we scheduled to meet on Sunday afternoon.
I went there yesterday. We sat and talked snakes for awhile and then about cats and dogs with his wife. It was an atypical Craigslist experience for sure, but how wonderful! In addition to the excellent animal - which was an "extra" male he purchased in order to get the female he wanted - I also found another vet that sees reptiles and the location of his clinic is about 15 miles from me and open as late as 10pm some nights.

Finally, more pics of the little boy after I got him home. And yes, it's a Green-Phase even! I am so excited to have the opportunity to grow up a little one again, and more than once I've read that a 2.1 can be advantageous for successfully breeding the species.

He is incredible! Congrats on the awesome find. Sometimes CL is worth checking. I have several prize snakes who I found on Craigslist, most of the owners were good people as well.

Thanks!

To my knowledge, Danny is the only one to have produced the green-phase in the past couple years. He had a litter of 10 born in 2013, and wow... one of them ends up on my local CL. I am simply amazed, giddy, and thankful! I probably need to be especially thankful to the extreme cold we've had here in Minnesota so far this winter because I was told that if he'd have been able to ship, this little guy would've been listed on KS, and for much more.

I check on craigslist every once in a while to see whats on there but most of whats on there are classic corns and ball pythons with some less common one popping up occationally. But I still check just in case, you never know what might happen.

Congrats Sonja!!  That is awesome!! I am jealous.

Once in awhile something cool pops up on CL.  My forst Chondro actualy came off of a CL ad a few years back.  I corosponded with them for a few weeks over Email, then phone.  It was a couple that had just hatched their second clutch.  When I went by to check her out and pick her up, I was amazed at their collection, considering it was from a CL ad, lol.
