Olive Python Babies are Here!

Posted by Sonja K. at 5/29/2014 12:49:09 PM

I came home from being gone this Memorial Day Weekend to 7 adorable baby Olives out of their eggs!

They arrived a couple days earlier than expected, and it was a bit disapointing that I missed seeing them pip, but I quickly forgave them.

Unfortunately, the remaining 10 never made it out of their eggs. They looked to be fully developed, there were no obvious developmental issues, and they were the same size as or close to the size of those that made it out, but for what I can only imagine were various reasons, it was not meant to be for those 10.

Some had twisted umbilical cords, and others perhaps weren't able to slit their eggs and drowned - I'm not sure.

I'm trying my best to not dwell on those that didn't make it, though, and instead celebrate the fact that I met my goal! I hatched Olive Pythons and I have 7 perfect babies that are as cute as can be!

I have some thoughts as to how I might incubate a little different next time, and I have been in contact with another breeder and we are planning to sit down and brainstorm at Tinley this fall and see what we come up with. Even though he has bred Olives for a number of years, with his set-up, he has had difficulties over the years with his Olive eggs taking on too much water, whereas the thought I have with mine is that perhaps I have too much air circulation in my incubator and it is drying the shells too much towards the end of the longer incubation that the Olives require. (~ 80 days) Interesting to me is the fact that it was mainly the eggs within the center of the clutch that hatched.

But enough of that, on to the pics!

After a little clean up:

Hope you enjoyed! I'm thrilled!

EEEEEE!!!  Congrats!!! You have some interesting observations, i wonder, if you think the eggshells could be different, maybe their incubation is different as well as far as air circulation and water intake like you said.

I will be over today!!!!

Woohoo! Congrats, Sonja! I was just going to ask about this clutch; figured they'd be due to hatch. This is a great accomplishment as it is, and I'm sure you'll get any incubation issues ironed out.

Too cool!  Mega mega congrats!!!

Huge congrats! Sad about the ones that didn't hatch, but hopefully things can be learned from them for more success in the future!

You don't even have a hognose. Start there. And conveniently enough, I have a clutch of them hatching right now.

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 5/29/2014 5:09:09 PM

And Boelens... Nate! Where are those Boelens you promised me!?!?

Hognose, Pfft!

Aaron hasn't successfully bred them yet so I haven't been able to get them for you.

My hogs are awesome. Just ask George about Little Nate. The other Little Nate.

I need one of those. Time to convince the wife to graduate so we can GTFO this apartment crap and have a proper reptile room.

Thanks all!

And I am gonna take out something that I wrote above so as to not mislead anyone that doesn't read through the comments - Rebecca was nice enough to point out that I may have been mistaking the littlest bit of a tongue flick for a different looking egg tooth, and in taking a closer look, I have to agree she's right. (Damn my older, tired eyes! ) Thanks Rebecca!

We need some updated pics of the little darlings!

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 7/2/2014 8:46:41 PM

I shall attempt such in the coming days, but are you sure Niki? You might squee yourself! I swear... they're cuter than puppies!

Rebecca ,
Posted At: 7/2/2014 9:03:33 PM

That's a hazard I can live with.  Puppy snake pics please!!

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 7/3/2014 9:26:13 AM

I made an attempt at pics - most ended up out of focus, though, as the babies over and over again crawled back to me, simply not understanding why I kept tryng to put them down on some silly branch thing - especially since they've already come to know that "mama" is the best "playground" of all!

Here... This!  got a lot of this! LOL

Rebecca ,
Posted At: 7/3/2014 9:27:45 AM

Yay!!  :D

Thank you!

Oh, goodness! That last picture pushes against the limits of my cuteness threshold. Mild mannered little strings, are they?

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 7/7/2014 9:32:15 AM

Yes, David. To this point, they have been absolute joys! I am enjoying them so much!

Posted At: 7/7/2014 12:38:30 PM
So happy for you, Sonja. You deserve this joyful olivaceous invasion! And please do keep us up to date on their progress; I know I won't get tired of pictures!

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 7/7/2014 1:14:37 PM

You know you want one, David...

George H. Wessel VII,
Posted At: 7/7/2014 2:08:51 PM

It's not a want. It's a NEED.

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 7/7/2014 2:10:53 PM

And I know how you NEED both an Olive and a Water, George!

George H. Wessel VII,

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 7/7/2014 3:52:47 PM

Oooooh, George... you don't fool me! You know... the NEED! Like because it's essential and / or very important!

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 7/8/2014 1:31:58 PM

David, I noticed that everything in your current collection has a pattern on it... You really NEED a patternless snake... like an Olive!

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 7/8/2014 10:50:42 PM

I think there may be a few others above that could use an Olive, too!

Posted At: 7/8/2014 11:18:46 PM

Indeed, my room IS chock-a-block with silly blotched and banded and rosette-d creatures...
