Denoting lineage in your ID numbers

Posted by Lauren at 10/26/2016 9:57:21 AM

The fellow I bought the L. williamsi and peacocks from threw in a baby laticauda from his line to make up for a few missed shipping dates. So now I have a baby from an unrelated line to grow out and pair with one of mine to have two relatively unrelated lines. This will give me the ability to sell unrelated pairs to folks who wish to try their hand at breeding. I've never had two lines of animals before and am wondering how people denote this in their ID numbers? I was thinking of giving each line a letter and adding that to the number.

IMO, that sort of complicates things. I have lineage description (where applicable) briefly described in the animal's comments section, then detailed lineage info with photos (where I can get them) in my records, which I pass along to buyers. I think building it into the ref number is just confusing for buyers down the road, unless there were a convention folllowed by everyone.

unless you're doing it for your own self; then it's whatever makes sense to you.

I am considering it mostly to keep track of which babies came from which lines. My current numbering system is this: PL-16.1, means Phelsuma laticauda, born 2016, 1st baby born. I have hatch dates in their iHerp records and on their cups (I keep them in hatchling groups). So my new baby is PL-16.14, but I need to differentiate him as being from another line. I added an A to the end. PL-16.14A
