Kind of sad....

Posted by Sonja K. at 9/16/2009 2:54:00 PM

Well, I may come off as a real fuddy duddy here, but I've been an active member of this site since the early days - or at least early on ~ 16 months ago / May 2008. Anyways, I remember when there were only a couple thousand animals and now look, there are more than 25,000! Aaron has done an absolutely amazing job with this site! I believe we can all appreciate his efforts! : ) So, onto what's been on my mind.... I'm really starting to miss the "good ol'days" - those when I can't recall even coming across a negative comment directed at anyone, or someone acting like they were an authority figure on any given manner. Some came to be known for their knowledge, but I believe they earned it. Never, in my recollection, were there sexual references made, or anything to the liking. Swear words - never. Smart ass remarks... nope! We had lots of fun, but it was good clean fun! It was appropriate for pretty much any age. As of late, well, the always positive, people-friendly feeling that I had when I logged onto this site is being replaced more and more everyday, it seems, with an air of negativity. I just had to say that I think it's sad. Sonja (bka_mama)

I remember when you were the only Sonja and my head didnt hurt trying to figure out who was who.

HaHa... you remember the good ol' days, too ; )

Why do you hafta say it like that? *the good ol' days* Im only 26 for christs sake!

I guess the issue is that when something this good gets out, youre bound to attract as many good people as bad. Plus, regardless of age, everyone is a pervert at heart.

Sonja K. ,

Ooh, Nate... I was just trying to play on that fuddy duddy phrase! LOL Least I didn't say "Well, when I was your age I had to walk to school - up hill - both ways!" LOL
But, seriously, when I was your age..... LMAO ; )

Jeff ,

Yeah I remember almost giving you heck one day when I saw the other Sonja adding all those animals. Yeah the good ol days when I made fun of everything Nate posted

I wasn't around for the good ol' days of iHerp, but I get what you're saying.

On the other side of the argument though, herpetology is a science, and as with any science, there is going to be debate and arguments.  It's one of the things that continually work to advance the world of herp keeping.

I do agree that there is no reason for flaming or negative comments directed at individuals.  Things oftentimes get heated and go beyond a point in which they should.  Plus, people get more uppity when they know that the person can't come through the monitor and strangle them to death, as they probably deserve.

I would *love* to hear solutions.

vonnick52,

Solution: Selective breeding in humans.

Pope of iHerp and Bread,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 3:42:17 PM
Jeff, the gray hairs on your head tell me that you definitely been around for the good ol days, the bad ol days, and all the other ol days. Hey, isnt it time for your nap ol timer?

Nick, i have a question- I was thinking about getting a ball python, but i dont know how to spell ball python, so i cant type ball python into the google. Can you tell me how to spell ball python?

vonnick52,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 3:45:20 PM
lol, I don't have a witty comeback for that, not even a crappy one.

Pope of iHerp and Bread,

Aaron, even if you decided that there should be moderators here, it wouldnt help too much. Even sites that have mods for each thread cant control every person and every post. Maybe a *terms of* could be required before someone joins the site. After a warning or two, you could operate that delete button of yours. I know you arent the only one with admin powers around here, right?

Jeff ,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 3:51:05 PM
I just got up from my nap nate. Isn't time for the kiddies to take their nap before dinner now?

Nick the only way Nate can spell it by saying I.Have.No.Balls.....Python

Jeff ,

When was the last time we had a photo contest or hmmm what happened to the chat room?

Ken ,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 3:56:27 PM
I agree with the selective breeding that or buy us all hookers and everyone will be in much better moods.  But that's a sexual reference and contributing to the bad ol' days of iherp.

Aaron Florian,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 4:00:44 PM
more features isn't the answer.

I might make a thread on this topic... it's a good one.

rating systems (this post adds to this discussion) and user ratings *may* help. "ignore users rated below X" or "ignore posts with no punctuation or too many Z's in it"

The problem is that as the site grows, you get more personalities involved... and any time you get two people in a room, they are eventually going to fight with each other. That's just human nature.

The other side to this is that iHerp needs to be somewhat self policing. It happens on any social network, forum, whatever. Look at YouTube comments. Then look at your facebook page.

The question is how to find the happy medium between the two.

Jeff ,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 4:12:10 PM
You're right Aaron. One problem I see is that a lot of people seem to be backing away who were contributing more to the community before so to speak. Meaning the good have weeded out themselves. How to fix that?

Deb A,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 4:19:15 PM
Good point, Jeff. I find myself not bothering to post comments especially when confronted with those who can't take the time to use a spell check or think that every other word needs to be profanity.

As long as those of us who are civil to each other are around, though, I think we will end up self policing the site.

Gotta run to a meeting now!

Ken ,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 4:20:23 PM
User ratings isn't a bad idea.  We already use the points method kinda sorta so it could be incorporated like that.

Aaron Florian,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 4:22:37 PM

The "good" still come to the site and will continue to for the application beneath. You can do all your tracking, breeding loans, classifieds, animal transfers, and ALL of that type of stuff and never read a blog. Or go into Answers. And that's totally fine, because iHerp is far more than just a forum. There's substance.

Facebook works for zillions because of the closed nature of its network. iHerp is more open the way it operates now. Maybe it's time to look at spawning off individual communities within iHerp.

Maybe it's a closed friends network.

And maybe it's an ignore button.

I'm not for a lack of options, but the thing through it all is that people will be people. And there's all type.

The one thing that I will start cracking down on when I have to is removing harassing posts, rebuking harassing users, or simply deleting people if it comes to that.

I'm all for a good, heated debate. As long as it remains mostly respectful.

Pope of iHerp and Bread,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 4:25:23 PM
I dont wanna be rated.

Im too self conscious.

DONT LOOK AT ME!!!!!!!!

Jeff ,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 4:29:54 PM
We've had some good debates on here Aaron with some brilliant opinions and thoughts coming from them but I have noticed a couple of people that have backed away from those too for one reason or another. The moderating posts and users may help.

Jeff ,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 4:31:21 PM
and Nate I'll catch up to you in iherp points. Watch your back.....I'll be #1 again once more

Jim Mangum,

alright...alright...I'll leave, i get the point...I mean I know I'm just such an @$$ anyways...

Man, just think about how pissy everyone's going to be when Seasonal Affective Disorder kicks in.

And how big a jerk I'll be.

I'll call Hana after you ya big wussy...

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 4:46:29 PM
I think Jeff is really hitting on what has been happening - every "forum" or whatever the case, seems to have their key posters that contribute greatly and perhaps you could say "define" the site. For instance, so and so goes on vacation for a couple weeks, and the "site" just isn't the same. Their presence and opinions are greatly missed. Sometimes people even just lurk to see what the person has to say on a given topic.
As Aaron stated, iHerp is far more than a "forum" and the "good" will continue to come and use its features. But, finding a way to keep some of those "key" people from backing away is important.

Jeff ,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 4:53:25 PM
How about sending lots of iherp of stickers, t-shirts, hats, silly key chain flashlight that dont work  and a free vacation to anywhere would be a nice way of bribing

One thing I've noticed with all the legislation trying to go through it's put a lot of stress on the herp community and arguments begin

Pope of iHerp and Bread,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 5:01:11 PM
Dont worry, iHerp, im not going anywhere. Youre stuck with me. And some of you even gave me your phone numbers. Ill bet you regret that, dont ya?

Jeff, im up to 169,320 + whatever i get for this post. You?

Jeff ,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 5:10:00 PM
Damn you. I'm going to have to start one of those blogs that makes no sense whatsoever but give you lots of iherp points. Did I give you my latest phone number? hmmm....

Pope of iHerp and Bread,

I dont know. I guess i should try and call you to see.

You turned off ninja mode?

Jeff ,

Don't call yet I used up all my minutes LOL and yeah I turned off Ninja mode for a bit. I don't know why. I'm not feeling very well. I just pointed my temp gun at my head and it's reading 99.4 lol

Dawn Switzer,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 5:24:58 PM
I mostly just lurk now. I really like this site a lot and I would hate to just stop posting...its been almost a year since I have been on here and I have notice latly a lot of flaming ...I had it happen to me in blog I posted my brum died I said something they didn't like but basically telling me I don't care abouy my animals that is defaintly not the case ...I post b/c I figurrd u guys on here have had it happen would post back to see how u delt with... And my other friends aren't into herps so I figured every one would understand how I was feeling.but after that it almost made me not want to post.. And as far as bad spelling well that's something that's not not going to change with me b/c I am dyslex (I proably spelled that wrong). And I already feel dumb so I don't anyone to tell me that... Smoetime it could be typos. I know that some people there brains move faster then they type . So ok I am done with that now.. aaron u run a wonderful site and I would hate to see it end up like the other sites:) ok I hope I made some sense here.

Dawn Switzer,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 5:27:41 PM
Hey aaron u think u can add an edit ur post button? And I know all about how cold it gets in ohio:)

Pope of iHerp and Bread,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 5:32:08 PM
Aaron, dont you have UVA/B lights and heat tape run all over your house?

You know, you wouldnt get so cold if you had a furry animal to keep you warm.

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 5:38:07 PM
I believe an edit button would help a lot, also perhaps a button to report inappropriate content within a blog or the questions, at least.

Joseph Jenkins,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 5:43:56 PM
I personally like iHerp as it is right now...well sorta, It isn't as good as the "Good Ol Days"  but it is still a great site.  It being "open" rather than group based allows us to get ideas from everyone and not just "friends"

Also i don't think a rating system would be great, it would hurt some ppl's feelins and some would use it to mess with others, like i would totally give Nate the worst possible ratings.... : )

vonnick52,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 5:50:12 PM
In order to appease the kids that never learned that losing is part of life, you could have a positive-only rating system.  Meaning you have a button to click when someone says something intelligent things and are helpful, but only God (Aaron) or other mods can deduct points for being a douchebag.

But having a postive-negative system, the people who get upset about being negatively rated might actually consider thinking before posting.  Strange concept.

vonnick52,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 5:50:53 PM
some* not something.  This organic chemistry is killing my brain.

Jeff ,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 5:50:56 PM
the edit button would be great feature for sure. I know Rebecca would love it LOL, Plus instead of a rating sytem if we all got an I.hate.you.nate button that would save so much time and trouble.

vonnick52,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 5:53:07 PM
I second the I hate Nate button, I'm pretty sure you could just post it on the top right corner of every page..hmmm...what to make the button look like?

I vote this:

vonnick52,

BTW, that is a Canadian Jeff Original Creation*

Jeff ,

LMAO..that's genius Nick...

Pope of iHerp and Bread,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 6:03:39 PM
Nick, thats not logical.

I still think we need to ignore everything Jeff says. Afterall, hes canadian and we all know they dont go to school, or have schools, or know how to spell school.

Jeff ,
Posted At: 9/16/2009 6:08:09 PM
We have little red school houses here. Besides if you ignore me I'll just I'll just post more stuff on you Nate and you'll lose out on the points

Nicky ,

lol nothing wrong with canadians EH!

Pope of iHerp and Bread,

Rebecca ,

EDIT BUTTON!!  YES!!!  I really need an edit button!  :D

I like Sonja's idea of having a button to report inappropriate content as well.  :)

This is a good discussion too; I've heard much the same said in private a few times over.  I personally haven't yet had my 1st iHerp Anniversary; I joined at Tinley last year, so I'm not sure if I was a part of those "good 'ol days" or not, but I'm sure in love with this site!  :)

Nicky ,
Posted At: 9/17/2009 12:04:59 AM
lol sorry jeff i thought u were being sarcastic, lol

Jeff ,
Posted At: 9/17/2009 12:10:42 AM
who me? never.....hehehe

and yeah you're part of the good ol days Rebecca. That's how having an edit button is good. I'm not sure how many times you wrote we need an edit button LOL

Speedy Gonzalez,
Posted At: 9/17/2009 12:17:08 AM
yes yes Edit button would be very nice to have ... :) i always leave words out of my posts sometimes too and don't catch it until after i post it.. i am a** backwards i read it over after i post it lol

Rebecca ,
Posted At: 9/17/2009 12:18:16 AM
Nah, I usually just make a typo, then post again to correct the typo and gripe about my fab typing skills!  ;)

I never spent too much time begging for a correction – I think I gave the idea to a few other people though!  :D

Sonja ,
Posted At: 9/17/2009 8:27:34 AM
Well, as the "other" Sonja on the board, I have to say I LIKE having 2 Sonjas!!  : )

I have met a few great people on here, enjoyed reading, and sometimes participating in, the discussions.

To me, it kind of goes without saying that people would use some degree of maturity and not use profanity or berate others.  Since that is not always the case, some sort of reporting innappropriate content seems like a good idea.  Too bad it is needed.

Pope of iHerp and Bread,
Posted At: 9/17/2009 9:32:13 AM
Sonja 2, i like having both of you as well. I didnt mean to imply that i didnt. Without you, i wouldnt have Chewy.

Melanie Bernal ,

Ahhhh...the good ol' days....Oh! You were talking about on here!!

Well, I do miss some things from the early iherp days...Jeff adding a new animal nearly every other day....everyone helping him figure out where he'll put it....seeing how many doors Nate leaves messages for in a day...or an hour...watching the animals get to 10,000! Stuff like that!!!

But...time goes on...the earth revolves...and NOTHING ever stays the same...change is inevitable. Personally, I love change('specially spare change!), I thrive on it. I expect it.

I do have to agree with the language thing. I do feel that's unnecessary. The spelling and grammar thing is, well, it's important to me, but I'm of the generation that started with letter writting(and no, this wasn't done on a stone tablet, Joseph!)...not texting. That change thing again. We all have to adapt. Spell check, Aaron?

I'm also not the type to blog...just not me, but it doesn't keep me from responding to blogs. I do try to chose my words carefully, though, especially with my opinions or advice. But I'm really a "glass is 3/4 full" kinda' person!

I happen to LOVE this site and I'm eternally grateful to Aaron for creating it. All the features, the classifieds. I use it everyday. I can keep better track of all my animals now. I've made lots of great friends. And yes, I too, was stupid enough to give Nate my phone number. (Just kidding...you know I love ya!) My life is better enriched from this site, corny as it may sound. I tell people about iherp on a regular basis. In fact, I'll bet there are more people on here from my area than any other because of it!!! (Not to say I'm the only one promoting iherp, Chris, Lisa, Joseph, Joel, Ross, David, etc, etc, etc!!!)

I agree, Aaron. It's just human nature. Perhaps a *sticky* on some terms. What I usually see happen is the newbies come out full force, excited with the site, and the "experts" put their .02 in and things get a bit crazy!! But...in the end, things tend to settle down a bit. We all just need to do a "mirror check" and remember we're all one big happy family!!

If you're going put your thoughts out there, whether in person or on a keyboard, not everyone's going to agree with you. It's what makes the world go 'round...differences. How does the saying go...
..."You can please some of the people all the time, all of the people some of the time, but you'll never please all of the people all of the time."

If we expect things to stay the same, we'll be sadly disappointed. After all, the earth is always turning. And Nate will always try to get the last word in!!!

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 9/17/2009 11:12:24 AM
Change can be a good thing - no argument there! Spelling and grammar is important to me, too, but what's most important for me is that I am able to understand the intended message a person was trying to get across. I have yet to have negativity directed at me personally, but it bothers me when I see it happening to others, and that's why I felt the need to write on this topic.

Pope of iHerp and Bread,
Posted At: 9/17/2009 11:51:13 AM
Last word.

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 9/17/2009 11:56:47 AM
Ha! May not get a chance like this often, but no matter what, if I wanted to, I could actually deny Nate having the last word here! - I could just turn off the option that lets others post - He He He - LOL

Pope of iHerp and Bread,

O.o

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Melanie Bernal ,
Posted At: 9/17/2009 12:07:18 PM
I agree, Sonja, I don't like the negativity either. I really try to be an upbeat positive person. I didn't mean to imply...? Sorry if I offended.
Guess I didn't choose my words very carefully.

Sonja K. ,
Posted At: 9/17/2009 12:12:05 PM
Oh my goodness, not at all, Mel. My response wasn't directed specifically at you - just some thoughts after reading a bunch of the responses.
