Not Her Year...

Posted by Sonja K. at 2/1/2010 10:58:53 PM

Tonight when I opened Amber's cage (one of my female Stimson's Pythons), these are what I found strewn throughout her bin. I sifted through the aspen, and came up with 20 of them. I guess it wasn't her year... maybe next year. I am still hopeful that my other girl, Topaz, may have a good clutch. She's about twice the size right now that Amber was.
In the largest egg I could see one very tiny red vein on one end, but that was it.

Thanks everyone.
Amber seems to be doing fine... I even offered her a mouse and she snatched it right up.

I know the feeling.  Last year I got a pile of 18 slugs from my female Coastal that looked EXACTLY like those!  It was a major disappointment.  I think the timing of the matings and ovulation were not optimal.  This year the same pair mated much earlier and they showed a lot more "interest" in each other, so I'm hoping to see a good clutch.

Good luck with the others.  I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya.

I'm sorry she slugged out for you Sonja, but do you know what to expect from Stimson's Pythons for clutch size?  20 sounds pretty darn good to me (without knowing more about the species)... so I look at this as a good indicator that all her stuff works right & well & you'll hopefully have a nice fertile clutch out of her next time!!

The typical # of eggs is in the 7 - 12 range, with 10 being the average... so yeah... would have been a VERY large clutch!
