New Guinea Water Pythons Out and On the Move...

Posted by Sonja K. at 8/9/2010 3:04:05 PM

As some may or may not remember, "Hope" gave me 8 eggs on June 13th.
Approx. 5 days into the incubation, one of them started to go bad and within a couple days I had lost 3 of them - leaving me with 5. All 8 had candled good, so my thought is that those 3 may have got jostled too much when I was taking away the clutch from Hope - just speculation, though.

This past Friday night, on day 54, the pipping began. I wasn't expecting them to for a few more days since the book I had stated 60 days, but I'm certainly not going to complain that I didn't have to wait as long!

Friday night, there was one peeking out and 2 other eggs with slits in them. As of Saturday morning, all 5 eggs had at least 3 slits each in them. By that night, 2 had made it out, but when I opened the lid of the bin to take a closer look, I smelt a bit of an odd odor. I feared one might not have made it, so I cut larger slits to see how the 3 were doing - unfortunately I was that brought me down to 4. Another made it out Sunday, and the last was out when I checked this morning.

All in all, I am extrememly happy! I only ever hoped that someday I'd be able to breed Waters, and it happened on my first attempt - I feel so fortunate! (This is even why I named my girl "Hope"!)

Here are a few pics of ones when they were still in their eggs, and then more photos of them out  - Hope you enjoy!

Group Shot : )

And another of all four:

So far they have been very sweet natured! It'd be awesome if that continues! LOL
And, there is just nothing cuter than those little egg tooths!

Today is kind of bittersweet - the babies of the clutch I looked most forward to are out and about, but it also marks the end of the season. No more eggs or babies to come in 2010.
Here's to a season as good as this one again next year!
