Another Boa Litter... My 4th of the Season

Posted by Sonja K. at 5/12/2011 11:56:41 AM

I knew Dixie was close to delivering mid-afternoon on Monday when I caught her with her tail up a bit. I got excited and was really hoping that I would be able to witness her giving birth.

At 5:45pm, I could see a visible difference in her tail, and I knew it wouldn't be much longer. I didn't want to leave, but it was time to bring my boys to their baseball games. I crossed me fingers that she would wait for me to return, or at least not have finished by the time I was able to get back.

Unfortunately, she wasn't able to wait... I guess it's hard to cross your legs when you don't have any!  Laughing

In the  ~ 2 1/2 hours I was gone, she delivered all her babies - 25 live and 1 slug (no stillborn). Even though I missed the actual birthing process, I came home to approximately half of them still in their membranes and it was very neat to watch them break through it and take their first breaths of air.

I loved the experience and took lots of pics, of course!

I hope you enjoy them!

And finally, after a bit of clean up...

The total was 25 and is made up of 17 Possible Super Salmons (Hypos) and 8 Normals, all of which are Poss. Het for Albino.

That is a lot of goo to clean. Grats on your pretty babies!

Thanks everyone!

The "goo" clean up really hasn't been bad at all for me - LOL

For a cage liner, I use red rosin paper. It comes in a 3 foot wide roll, and I use two pieces cut to depth (overlaps in the middle). It has made clean up a breeze! Basically, it is just the matter of folding the ends of the paper to the middle, and throwing it away - the "goo" hasn't soaked through that paper with any of the litters I had last year or this - perhaps a little along the sides to clean up (at the edge of the paper) but nothing much at all. : )
