Did Some Field Herping Near Grand Rapids, Minnesota...

Posted by Sonja K. at 7/16/2008 10:55:20 PM

On July 6th, I returned home from a 9 day vacation at my family's cabin near Grand Rapids, Minnesota. We had a wonderful time fishing and 4-wheeling, and got to do a little field herping, too. One of the highlights was when my 9 year old son caught his first two snakes - a common garter snake and a reddish-brown phased red-belly. He was so excited, and I told him that he is now an official snake wrangler!  : )

Here are some of the herps we found with a few other pics thrown in.

Northern Leopard Frog:

Two of my boys checking out a raided turtle's nest. - We saw a lot of these along side the dirt road.

Western Painted Turtle:

Wood Frogs:

My Oldest Boy with His First Catch - a Common Garter Snake:

And here is the reddish-brown phased red-bellied snake he caught.:
(Shhh! Don't tell Grandma it escaped in the cabin!)     : o          She is sooo scared of snakes!)

Under One Board, 4 Snakes, I caught them all! Quick little buggers.

Each night, we watched this spider work on its web:
