About Thomas
My Reptile Interests
I keep a decent variety of snakes and a few lizards of interest. I've been keeping herps since the 1980s, and snakes since 1992. I started with boids, and have always been a huge fan of locality Boa constrictor. Eventually my interest led me to focus on venomous snakes, and at one point I maintained a rather significant collection of vipers, pitvipers and elapids, many of which I also bred regularly. In 2005, I officially joined the academic side of herps, and my collection has since undergone some interesting changes. Initially I had to scale back quite a bit, but have lately been working to slowly rebuild my collection. I also do quite a bit of field herping - some for work and some just for fun.
Other Interests
I enjoy photography, and usually make an effort to document my various (mis-)adventures accordingly. I don't have much of an artistic skill (can't draw or play instruments to save my life), so I use the camera as my creative outlet. It always travels with me, and allows me to relive the moment many times over. Motorcycles are also an important part of my life, and I ride on the street, dirt, and on the track. There are very, very few things in life that are as fun as riding a bike. I currently ride a Triumph Street Triple 675, a KTM 690 Enduro R, and a KTM 1190 Adventure R on the street, and my track-only competition race bikes used to include a YZF-R6 and a 636, with which I competed at the regional level in both sprint and endurance racing. Lastly, I also have a couple of dirt bikes, including a Honda CRF450R and a Yamaha TT-R125LE. Other fun activities of mine include camping, hiking, and traveling. I've been addicted to traveling all of my life, and have been fortunate enough to having had the opportunity to visit a number of countries throughout South and Central America, as well as Africa, Asia, and Europe. Life is a book, and if you're not traveling, you're only reading the first page! I'm a huge dog lover, and have actively fostered GSDs for a regional GSD rescue organization. I also have two GSDs of my own, both of which are working line dogs, and are essentially my kids and best friends. Finally, I'm also an avid reader, and own more books than I care to admit. I especially enjoy non-fiction literature, and have a bit of a thing for history and nature. Many of the answers are out there, written in books - you just need to figure out the questions.

My educational background is pretty diverse. In a previous life, I studied information systems, which I completed with an MBA in '02. After switching careers, I got into the academic side of herpetology, and received a Master's in Evolutionary Biology in '07 with my morphological work on dispholidine colubrids. In 2012, I finished up my PhD dissertation in Quantitative Biology on the phylogeography and molecular systematics of dispholidine snakes. Other current research projects include a variety of molecular phylogeography and systematics projects, including the genera Bitis, Dispholidus, Thelotornis, Telescopus, Lamprophis, Dasypeltis, Crotaphopeltis, Atractaspis, Causus, and Aspidelaps. I also teach both lecture and laboratory courses in a number of subjects, including comparative vertebrate anatomy, human anatomy & physiology, and cellular & molecular biology, to name a few.
