Animal Name: 0.1 LTC Dendroaspis polylepis
Species: Black Mamba
Dendroaspis polylepis
Sex: Female
Locale: Tanzania
Comments: I first started working with black mambas 20 years ago, and found them to be a particularly gratifying species to work with. Its an incredibly majestic species that is no less awe-inspiring than a Cape buffalo or a leopard. They're highly alert animals that are always interested in the activities that are going on around their enclosure.

Matt Crews imported a few specimens from Tanzania in early 2013, including this young female. At the time, she was around 6-7 ft in length, which is typical for a 2-3 year old specimen. She has since grown to 8-9 ft in length, feeding ferociously on medium rats. I acquired the male--a solid 9 ft specimen--in the Summer of 2015 from Jeremy Hargett.

The first time I actually tried to breed this species was in 2005, and the only fertile egg of the clutch went bad early on in the incubation process. Years later, in 2017, it finally came together, and this pair produced six fertile eggs that hatched in July 2017.
