Comments:	Naja haje was originally described by Linnaeus (1758) as Coluber haje. After some time of affiliation with various other genera, it was eventually moved to the genus Naja by Merrem (1820). Its type locality is lower Egypt, and was originally considered to be one taxon with a massive distribution range throughout the northern part of the African continent. In 2009, Trape et al. reviewed the species using both morphological and molecular data, and determined that it was actually a species complex, consisting of Naja haje from North and East Africa, Naja arabica from the Arabian peninsula , and a new species, Naja senegalensis from the Sudano-Sahelian savanna belt of West Africa. Naja haje can be distinguished from N. arabica by the number of subcaudal scales (65 or fewer in N. haje, 65+ in N. arabica) and in the number of anterior dorsal scale rows (often 19 in N. arabica, and 21+ in N. haje). In addition, the supralabials of N. haje are often contrastingly patterned with a prominent “teardrop” marking (except in very dark animals), whereas the supralabials in N. arabica are typically unpatterned. This female N. haje is actually from Egypt, and is morphologically a classic representative of this species. She had a bit of nose rub upon arrival, but this usually heals quickly in a couple of shed cycles.
