Animal Name: Sergeant Slithers
Reference Code: 12NORMALF1
Species: Ball Python
Python regius
Sex: Female
Birthdate: 6/1/2012
Comments: Sergeant Slithers was my first snake. In my previous job at a pet store, my manager approached me telling me about a ball python we had in the store that I had never previously heard about or seen that was dying. The young snake had refused food for 8 weeks - and he was only a few months old. He was extremely emaciated, with ribs completely visible. He had been treated with panacur but had no internal parasites. I made it known that this was inappropriate, and requested my manager allow me take the snake home to at least TRY to help her. My manager agreed.
I took her home and began tube feeding her with critical care and offering her live food (instead of F/T that the store offered), then took her to a herp vet who diagnosed her with a severe RI, and started subcutaneous fluid injections as well as regular soaking.
The snake was given a 10% chance, if that, at surviving by one vet - and a 100% chance of death by another vet. "This snake is going to die."
I didn't give up on her, and now today, she is doing well. She is still very skinny, but she is, in all other ways, healthy. Never refusing meals and giving me regular full sheds. She's an incredible snake.
