Animal Name: Morla
Species: Common Snapping Turtle
Chelydra serpentina
Sex: Male
Locale: Wild Caught
Comments: Morla was found in my mother's classroom Sunday, September 15, 2013. He has been there since Friday that weekend at the very least and was severely dehydrated.

I thought from the lifelessness, the smell, the dried out skin, the fact his eyes looked dried shut, and the stiff limbs that he died in my hands.

I soaked a paper towel, anyway and gently dabbed him until he began to show signs of life. I took him to my folks' home in a ziplock bag of water and put him in a little Kritter Keeper we found in the garage.

When I took him to my house I got a larger Keeper and hooked up a filter and got him some fish and he remains a happy little poot.

I want to make sure that he'll be alright before I release him on my family's ranch.

Released this fella September 24, 2013. I marked him as "Sold" but he was released after he recovered.

Aw, that's awesome, but really sad about your little fella! :( I'm sure I'm going to hate it, but we can't really accommodate him. I hate goodbyes! At least he'll be on the ranch. Maybe I'll see him when I visit the pond! :)

Don't be surprised if you have a hard time releasing him... :-)

Snappers were my first love. Their personalities and love of food are outstanding. I spent most (if not all) of my teen years researching Chelydra. I've had probably 6 or so snappers and I've even had one alligator snapper. I had him for a good 6 years until a very unfortunate choice of pond liner forced me to release him to a wildlife rehabber. He made a full recovery and was released (the rule was that if they take him in, they must release him). I miss him a lot.

Absolutely adorable! A mini mirror image of their 60 lbs momma :-) . But I think what you have there is a common snapper (Chelydra serpentina). Alligator snappers look similar, but possess more of a prominent beak, the infamous pink, fleshy lure (the worm) where their tongue would be, and some wicked cool "spikes" along the carapace. They also get 100lbs heavier than their common cousins.
