Reference Code: 0.1 CB10 Protobothrops cornutus
Species: Horned Pit Viper
Protobothrops cornutus
Sex: Female
Comments: This fascinating oviparous species of pitviper was described by Smith (1930) from a single specimen that was collected at Mount Fan Si Pan in the Lai Chau Province of North Vietnam. In 1937, a second specimen was collected from North Vietnam (Smith 1943), and a third was reported from Bach Ma, Thua Thien-Hue province in South Vietnam by Campden-Main (1970). However, the voucher for the third specimen was subsequently lost. Thus for a long time, it was known only from a couple of specimens, until it was rediscovered in central Vietnam (Phong Nha-K Bàng National Park, Qung Bình Province) near the Laotian border in 2001 (Ziegler and Herrmann, 2002).

It is relatively small and inhabits low-elevation rainforests. That live specimen was collected at an elevation of approximately 150 m in dry semi-evergreen forest in a limestone karst area (Herrmann et al. 2004).

In 2004, Herrmann et al. reassigned this species to the genus Protobothrops, based on both morphological and molecular data.

I managed to acquire a pair of this species that is part of the Moscow Zoo lineage.
