Comments:	Lucky is an Eastern box turtle that I rescued from a colleague who left her to die in a 10 gallon tank in a classroom during the summer of 2007. Her face and feet were severely damaged by the inappropriate substrate she was housed on (dry potting soil) and lack of water and food; consequently, she lost several toes on each front foot and most of her nares (nostrils). She was treated by Dr. Michael Herko at Falls Rd Animal Hospital in Baltimore, MD, and was given a course of antibiotics and appetite stimulants for 14 days. It took about 3 months for her to begin eating again, but she is now significantly healthier and quite a good eater. Her face has healed somewhat, though she still lacks nostrils. I assume she breaths through her mouth because of this handicap. Her date of birth and other particulars are unknown, however, she was an adult when she came to me. I call her a she but I am no expert on sexing turtles!

Look at the bottom of the shell if it is flat it is a female, males are concave. Males also have red eyes. So it looks like you have a female.

Wow. That is a lucky box turtle. I'm glad you were able to save her! I love box turtles. I've saved a few in the past that were crossing dangerous roads.
