Comments:	Copperheads are one of my favorite species of North American snake: they are beautiful, highly variable, and have a large distribution range. Traditionally, there have been five subspecies recognized, some of which were considered to overlap/integrade. However, Guiher and Burbrink (2008) found that there are actually three phylogeographic lineages of copperheads, which do not correspond to the traditional subspecific division. I acquired this specimen from Jared Watts, who in turn had purchased it from Ted Thompson at Susquehanna Ectotherms. Based on its implied locality, it belongs to the western clade within Agkistrodon contortrix.
