Animal Name: MB Oscar
Reference Code: MBOWCMNH2007
Species: Moluccan Gecko
Gehyra marginata
Sex: Male
Comments: My LTC Halmahera Gecko (Gehyra marginata) whom I now think is a female, which would make sense why she never mated with any of the females I tried to pair her with over the years. I picked her up at a show in Manchester NH back in 2007. She's been with me ever since. She dropped her tail when I had to reloacte her temporarily back on the first of Nov 2011 when we lost power due to a freak snow storm around Halloween... It's growing back nicely at the time of this writing (3/2/12). SHe is still totally unhadleable because of how badly she freaks out whenever I even go into the herp room. I've lost hopes to ever be able to handle her, so I spoil her as best I can with bigger and better accomodations. She's currently in a 40g tall, buy will be moving to a much larger space in the future, I just have to save up the cash (not too hard) and find the space (much more of a challenge).

Yeah, if you're not seeing wax protruding, and that V isn't neon brown/tan/yellow, you've likely got a girl. It happened to me too, friend sold me a "male" and it ended up being female after all.

ok, so there is no waxy residue on the pores, so does that make Oscar a girl?

I finally got a picture of my male so you can see the differences, ahaha. http://iherp.com/Gallery/90710/67087_201016_Large_PxGVTNnFReKqd.jpg Yellow, waxy, and they have a waxy area on their feet too.

Oscar's pores are def bigger then that if I remember correctly. I will try to get him onto the glass next week sometime.

Here's a pic I took of a female. Faint V visible: http://iherp.com/Gallery/90710/20447_144700_Large_3lKXOEsEsUPLG.jpg

I will try to get a pic of the belly, but I don't think it will be any time soon. He is super shy and skittish.

If you can get a picture of his belly, I can sex him in a heartbeat. ;) Boys get gross bright yellow waxy protruding pores in a V shape between the underside of the legs, but females only have a pale V shape. But yeah, he's definitely not a vorax as listed here on iherp.

Thanks. He's got a special place in my heart. I purchased him as wc back in'07. He has been with me since. He escaped the first night in the hotel, and bit my friend's son's finger pretty bad when he tried to recapture him... Hence the "MB" (medium bastard). Tho I can't say I wouldn't have done the same had I been ripped from home and some giants tried to eat me (what he must have been thinking). How do you reliably sex them? I wanted to breed him at one point, but he never took to any female. I'm wondering if I had one or the other sexed wrong...

Ooh, beautiful Gehyra marginata! Where did he come from? They're listed as "moluccan geckos" here on iHerp, FYI. I have four of these beauties myself. :D
