Reference Code: 0.1 CB09 Philodryas baroni
Species: Baron's Green Racer
Philodryas baroni
Sex: Female
Comments: Philodryas baroni was described by Berg in 1895 from Tucuma´n and Riacho de Oro of the Chaco region of Argentina.

P. baroni are mildly venomous. In a bite case reported by Kuch and Jesberger (1993), a 90 cm specimen bit a 22-year-old male on the thumb, then withdrew immediately. Slight burning pain and minimal bleeding were immediately apparent, followed by swelling after five minutes. One hour later, the entire hand was swollen and petechial hemorrhages were present on the skin. Swelling progressed to mid-forearm level, but recovery was complete within 48 hrs.

The female is blueish-green, and is significantly larger than the male. She laid a clutch of infertile eggs in June/July 2012, but then laid a clutch of 12 fertile eggs in 2013, of which 11 hatched.

I never realized you had P. baroni! Looks like you put them in brumation. I have 2 pairs going this year - first season trying to breed them and I chose to not brumate. We'll have to compare notes at some point.

Sweet. I like the envenomation account. There have been human fatalities reported from other Philodryas species. The problem with such accounts though is that they often do not specify if the victim actually died as a result of venom toxication or if they succumbed to anaphylaxis. -p-
