Reference Code: 1.0 CB Agkistrodon bilineatus
Species: Mexican Cantil
Agkistrodon bilineatus
Sex: Male
Death Date: 11/10/2012
Comments: Named for its head pattern ("two-lined"), this species was described by Gunther in 1863. The type locality is "Pacific coast of Guatemala", where these snakes are locally referred to as barba amarilla or cantil de aqua. The name cantil is thought to have been derived from the Tzeltal Mayan word "kantiil", meaning "yellow lips", although the Tzeltals are indiginous to the Chiapan highlands, and are thus unlikely to have had much contact with these snakes. It occurs along the Pacific coast and foothills from Sonora to western Mexico (Campbell and Lamar 2004). It inhabits seasonally dry forest, tropical deciduous forest, thorn forest, and savanna. Typical adult length is about 75 cm, with the known size record being 138 cm. There are three recognized subspecies, including A. b. bilineatus from the pacific coast of Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador, A. b. russeolus from the Yucatan peninsula and northern Belize, and A. b. howardgloydi from the pacific coast of Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.

After regularly breeding the nominate form of this species years ago, I acquired a nice pair of classic A. b. bilineatus in September 2010. They had been doing well, and I was hoping to be able to produce offspring again in the near future. Unfortunately, I lost this male in November 2012.
