Reference Code: 0.1 CB Agkistrodon taylori
Species: Ornate Cantil
Agkistrodon taylori
Sex: Female
Comments: A. taylori was formerly considered to be a subspecies of A. bilineatus, but was elevated to species status by Parkinson et al. (2000). It was named in honor of American herpetologist Edward Taylor, who did a significant amount of work in Mexico, among other places. It occurs in the Mesquite-grassland, thornforest, and tropical deciduous forest of northeastern Mexico. Adults commonly reach 75-90 cm in length, and their maximum size has been estimated at 137 cm. Adults show sexual dimorphism for coloration: males tend to have more subdued colors, whereas females tend to be much more strikingly colored. They also undergo some interesting ontogenetic changes: juveniles are much more greyish, which is eventually replaced by various shades of brown, black, maroon, yellow, and red-orange. The tail color changes from yellow to green, gray-green, and eventually to a pale grey.

After breeding this species repeatedly in 2005/2006, I acquired this pair in September 2010. The female is a particularly striking example of the contrasting coloration and markings that make the adults such attractive animals. Juveniles, on the other hand, tend to be dull and monotonously colored.
