Feeding F#20 Small Pinky Whole /Benebac Pinky weighed 2-3g. Took ~10 minutes to swallow, was interested quickly. Followed normal procedure in prep/cleaning. Found normal defecation 2 days later, and a bit more another 2 days later.

Comments Behavior Out of sight in morning. Likely burrowed somewhere.

Comments Behavior Climbing vine in evening. Retreated when lights on. Was curled up under tube hide when I got him out for feeding.

Feeding F#19 Small Pinky Whole /Benebac F#19 January 9, 2011 1 Kahoots pink (2-3g), well slit along head, back, stomach Prey thawed via 10 minutes directly in pre boiling filtered water, offered on curved 10" tongs (cleaned with dish soap), directly on bin floor. Benebac applied to middle of body. Ate! Took no more than 10 minutes, approx 5. Started at middle, worked down to the head. Left a much smaller tummy lump, but visible. Considering moving to a 6 day feeding schedule, or 7 days depending (on what?). This one was a day late due to my schedule.

Feeding F#17 - Small Pinky Whole /Benebac 1 Kahoots pink (2-3g), well slit along head, back, stomach, shoulders, haunches. Prey thawed via 10 minutes directly in post boiling filtered water, offered on curved 10" tongs (cleaned with dish soap), directly on bin floor. Benebac applied to middle of body. Ate! Fed about midnight between 24th/25th. Was in paper towel tube in viv at feeding time (can't get him out of those easily). Put whole tube in feeding tub and mouse outside it. Slowly a snake head emerged, grabbed the pinky by the middle, and slowly disappeared back into tube. 5 minutes later head emerged on other side peeking out, retreated. 20 minutes later appeared he had eaten, so returned to viv (still in tube). Eventually emerged from tube with a sizable food bump in belly (scales noticeably stretched). Hopefully not too big. Tube removed and disposed of (bloodied a bit). Tried to be careful to remove aspen shavings from tube, hopefully did not miss.

Shed S#2 Shed Fed Found shed in the morning, was not there the night before. Was in two pieces (before I broke off the tail getting it out, again), most of it in one, but with the lower jaw and about 1 inch of neck ventral separated in its own piece. Top of head piece was torn before I took it out (as best I can tell). Eye caps present in shed. Top of head piece appears to be missing scale between eyes. Correlating scale on snake appears darker, inconclusive whether bathing removed it or if it is even still retained on snake. Tail tip appears present in shed. All saddles accounted for. Cloaca in shed visible but less pronounced than last time. Overall a decent shed, but not the best. Humidity was rather low overall, but humid hide was provided.

Benebac applied to middle of body. Ate! Was a bit slow to take the food, but quicker to swallow it. No more than 10 minutes to swallow. Started with head. Bin wiped down directly after feeding with peroxide and water, dried. Went in blue within 4 days, but found defecations, no regurge detected. Spot cleaned day after feeding (likely from F#15, definitely feces). Spot cleaned 3 days from feed on cool side as normal, and again the next day on warm side. All normal looking urates+feces. Found in blue 4 days after feeding. No regurge detected.

Prey thawed via 10 minutes directly in post boiling filtered water, offered on curved 10" tongs (cleaned with dish soap), directly on bin floor. Ate! Started with head piece, took it quickly and was quicker to swallow this time. No more than 10 minutes. Started at cut end by sticking his nose right in it. Next offered tail piece, was quick to take it and swallowed again in no more than 10 minutes. Pinky weighed 2g when frozen. Spot cleaned Dec 10 (from Dec 9). More spot cleaned Dec 12 (from Dec 11). Bin wiped down directly after feeding with peroxide and water, dried.

Prey thawed via 10 minutes directly in pre boiling filtered water, offered on curved 10" tongs (cleaned with dish soap), directly on bin floor. Ate! Started with head piece, took it quickly and spent ~15 minutes swallowing it. Next offered tail piece, was a little slower to take it and then spent ~20 minutes swallowing. Spot cleaned urates from towel roll next day (December 2). Bin wiped down directly after feeding with peroxide and water, dried. Spot cleaned all on next feeding day (December 7, 2011): had been there at least a day, probably more. On purple flower in R#1, so I did not see it earlier. More sandy, not at all gooey.

Feeding F#13 - Small Pinky Headless - 2 pieces /Benebac headless Kahoots pinky in 2 pieces with benebac. Prey thawed via 10 minutes directly in post boiling filtered water, offered on curved 10" tongs (cleaned with dish soap), directly on bin floor. F#13. Ate! Started with tail piece, took it quickly and efficiently. Then offered second piece (shoulders and belly), took it quickly but spent about 10/15 minutes getting it down. Pushed it against himself a few times, curled up around it, held it up, held it down, finally got it down eventually. Left 2 lumps in stomach, a bit of a gap between them where the scales could not touch the floor flatly. Immediately slithered into toothpaste tube when offered, and then immediately out into warm side of viv. Feeding between 11 PM and midnight:30 with space heater on. Spot cleaned November 28, slightly larger than previous few (as expected), otherwise similar. Bin wiped down after with peroxide and water, dried.

Feeding F#12 - Small Pinkie Butt Half /Benebac back half of Kahoots pinky (from F#10) with benebac Prey thawed via 10 minutes directly in post boiling filtered water, offered on curved 10" tongs (cleaned with dish soap). Wouldn't take from plate, put directly on floor of feeding bin. Ate! Was quick to eat. Took several minutes to get the pinky down (tail end first after trying to start from the middle). After eating was looking around for a burrow and climbing for an escape. Eventually slithered into the tube and back to viv. Fed ~midnight with space heater on. Spot cleaned November 21 (just under 48 hours later). Looked same as November 10 spot.

Feeding F#11 - Small Pinkie Head/Neck /Benebac Kahoots pinky head/neck with benebac Prey thawed via 10 minutes directly in post boiling filtered water, offered on curved 10" tongs (cleaned with dish soap). Ate! Was pretty quick to eat and looking for more when done. Curled around the pink head without touching it before taking it. After eating the pink and looking around, came back to the spot where the pink was and opened his mouth like he was trying to eat something that wasn't there, or replacing the jaws. Fed ~10 PM with space heater on. Wouldn't take from plate, put directly on floor of feeding bin. Shed should be soon. Hopefully he is not too close to blue. Found similar spot to November 10 on Nov 16 (within 48 hours). Probably fine.

Replaced paper with aspen, lined paper towels on bottom and under water dish. Changed water. Lightly bathed Sherlock in room temperature filtered water (he was not a fan) but no water pouring. Colors seem to be dulled again and it's almost 1 month since last blue, so postponing F#11.

Feeding F#10 - Small Pinkie Head/Shoulders /Benebac Kahoots pinky head/shoulders with benebac Ate it! Was quick to take prey (2 waves of the zombie dance), but struggled to swallow it. New batch of mice from Kahoots, looked fresher. Fed earlier than usual in evening (~7:30PM) with space heater on. Normal defecation found November 9, three days later.

Refused Food F#9 - Small Pinky Half, Head REFUSED /Benebac Arctic Mice pinky head/shoulders; pinky head with benebac Tried to feed pinkie head/shoulders with benebac, did not eat. Tried also another pinky head without benebac, did not eat. Both items thawed via 10 minutes of hot tap water, cut with exacto knife. New feeding bin: Sherlock spent all his time in the bin restlessly trying to escape. When first placed in bin, rattled his tale, not specifically directed at me (facing away from me). Did not acknowledge food. Put Sherlock and food items in deli cup on warm side for the night, did not eat. :( Did not eat. The second pinky head looked suspicious, as though it had been cut while unfrozen, blood exposed, fibers stuck to cut. Will try new food source; Artic Mice box says copy write 2009 but no other date stamped.

Feeding F#7 - Small Pinkie Head /Benebac 1 Arctic Mice pinkie head, coated in benebac for small animals Was reluctant to eat; interested in the head when I wiggled it at him, followed it around and up, nosed it, licked it, held it in mouth for a while but didn't swallow, spat it back out, I dipped it in water and left him there for 20 minutes covered when he finally ate it. Bath after; poured water freaked him out. He's learned to wiggle backwards to try to escape (didn't work). Post-regurge protocol. Defecation found over several days. 6 separate units of yellow goo, probably indicates not well digested, but not regurge.

Feeding F#6 - Small Pinkie REGURGED 1 Artic Mice pinkie mouse Had to dig to find him on the cool side. Less flighty, tried handling a few minutes to let him calm down. Was eager to escape the feeding bin. Had to shake the mouse at him. Started at the middle (where the tweezers had gripped), gnawing for a bit. Lifted mouse away from me when approached. Eventually worked way down to tail end. Regurgitated. :( Found October 17, likely was on October 13. Found in official blue October 15. No more blue feedings.

Feeding F#5 - Small Pinkie 1 Arctic Mice pinkie mouse Had to dig to find him on the warm side. Was not quite as flighty as last time, but still a bit. Feeding F#3 - Small Pinkie 1 Arctic Mice pinkie mouse Reclusive, but ok I think? Refused to come out of his toothpaste box while I was present. I put the box (with him in it) in the feeding container with the mouse in front, covered with a paper towel. 20 minutes later the mouse was gone and the snaky was slithering around, until he saw me and promptly retreated to his toothpaste box, which I returned to his vivarium. Some minutes later I saw him burrowing into the paper slowly on the cool side. Possible pre-blue behavior? I see no eye clouding and he still has his sight, but his scales have dulled over the past few days. I would prefer not to feed in blue. Will be watching carefully for regurge. No regurge. Feces found and spot cleaned easily on Sept 28.

Feeding F#1 - Small Pinkie 1 Arctic Mice pinkie mouse Reluctant to eat. Initially ignored mouse to hide in paper towel. Took mouse when presented nose to nose. Began by staring at it for a while, touching nose to nose for a while without opening mouth, slowly "nibbling" the nose with hinged jaw, eventually unhinged jaw to eat the mouse properly. Took a while (several minutes?) to close mouth completely over mouse. Relatively rapid swallowing. Defecated promptly 48 hours later.
