Blog :
Just some notes to self enclosure and plant related

Pretty much everything is the same old same old from previous blogs here. Though the marbled gecko did find a new home, and we lost a kinked adult gecko from what I can only assume was something related to the kink in her back that she had. I'm writing this blog mainly to remind myself of some things related to the reptile enclosures and stuff. Alot of these notes relate to the house plants I also have. I am not mentioning how poisonous certain plants are. Any of my animals in bioactive set ups are not fed in their tanks as I am too afraid of impaction from eating something in the tank, so poisonous plant ingestion is not a problem for my animals. Also honestly only my tarantula, a few older retired corn snakes, the garter snake, and the mourning geckos are in bioactives with plants. The rest are in easy to clean plastic tubs. Do your own research before putting plants in your enclosures please.
-The dwarf swiss cheese plant is native to Florida and I had no idea until I looked it up. It is a good plant idea for a native U.S. Inspired bioactive garter snake tank. Trying to see if I have any other native plants in the house that would do well in that kind of set up too.
-Some species of Peace lily is also native to central america and south america. So again a nice low light native for a garter tank.
-My favorite hibiscus selling site "Hidden Valley Hibiscus" announced retirement and no longer will have any plants including the blue ones I have tried to get years in a row but they kept selling out. I can't find another hibiscus grower/hybridizer anywhere online like them and now I'm mad cause I never got my blue ones. I did, however buy a Hibiscus fragilis from them a few years back which was the plant I had in my mourning gecko tank for the longest time. This hibiscus is a pure line native to the Mauritus. Apart from the pest problems I have been fighting with that particularly plant, it did actually do really well with the geckos until I had to take it out to deal with the powder mites on it. The humidity in the enclosure was aggrivating the problem making the mites worse cause it gave them perfect conditions. Since this plant is so rare I wanted to take it out to deal with the problem. I'm putting Hoya carnosa in with the mourning geckos this time around. My dream of a hawaii island themed mourning gecko tank is still hitting bumps along the way lol.
-Looking for a Hoya lemoniaca as it is also native to the places where my animals come from. It also smells really nice when it flowers though. Looks like a plant that would do well in my home and set ups.
-Tradescantia zebrina (Wandering Jew) plant is also native to Mexico so it's close enough to be an option for bioactive tanks trying to replicate plants native to U.S. The problem with this is the plant is very delicate so it's really only good for enclosures with tiny creatures. So micro geckos, dart frogs, various isopods and other arachnids and insects. Anything bigger will destroy them. I have these but they are so delicate they never grow looking good in anything not even in a pot.
-Tradescantia pallida (Purple Queen) also native to Mexico, is tougher than the wandering jew but still delicate enough that I wouldn't suggest for anything but micro species, tarantulas, and other insects. This one however looks nicer in a pot and won't break at a tiny touch.
-Calla Lily is also native to the U.S. but it is native to parts of california along the west coast. It's a beauitful plant that needs a bit more sun. If you have a well lit bioactive you can probably grow these. They have dwarf varieties too so would be nice for a garter tank. I have lower light in my room with light supplemented to the garter specific tank against the window. However, a big female garter will bend and crush calla lily so I would not plant these with big females. Now something smaller like ribbon snakes or other smaller species would be fine.
-The rest of my plants are from varying places, but it was only the mourning geckos and the garter I was trying to find their homeland kinds of plants for their tanks. If anyone does read this far down and has ideas for me please comment.
