Overview
An unlikely pairing that will prove informative for next year.
At 7 feet, this 2001 CH virgin female dwarfs her barely 4 foot male counterpart. As the male was wild-caught though, he is likely as old (or older) than she is despite his small size. Barker and Barker (1994) make two interesting breeding notes about this species: 1. Although individuals are frequently of size and physiologically capable of breeding at 2-3 years of age, many will remain sexually inactive until 5-8 years of age. 2. Mate choice is also a serious consideration; some males and females are incompatible and no amount of manipulation will entice them to breed together.
Thus, a clutch from these two seems unlikely this year -- the mechanics of a successful copulation will certainly be interesting! If nothing else though, it should give me a better idea about the sexual "readiness" of these two individuals, and their compatibility with each other for future breedings.
