Comments:	Cerastes cerastes was originally described by Linnaeus (1758) as Coluber cerastes. Four subspecies have been proposed, including the nominate form, Cerastes c. karlhartli from the Sinai peninsula and southeastern Egypt through Kordofan, Cerastes c. mutila from southwestern Algeria and adjacent Morocco, and Cerastes c. hoofieni from the southwestern corner of the Arabian Peninsula. That said, the two subspecies C. c. karlhartli and C. c. mutila are not universally recognized, and were synonymized with C. cerastes by McDiarmid et al. (1999). This adult male shoots first and asks questions later, and is scheduled for his first attempt at breeding for 2016, after being in my collection for several years already. He came to me from Egypt in 2013. Unfortunately he was killed by the female in late September 2015.
