Comments:	This species was originally described by Smith (1849) as Heterolepis poensis. Eventually, Lönnberg (1910) moved it to the genus Mehelya, where it remained until Kelly et al. (2011) placed it in the genus Gonionotophis. The type locality is Bioko, Equatorial-Guinea. Segniagbeto et al. (2011) examined eight specimens from Togo, and provided the following data: TL from 780 to 1305 mm; 15 MSR keeled; 248-256 ventral keeled; 108-147 sc, vertebral row enlarged with two keels; anal plate single; 6-8 supralabials; 8 infralabials; 1 preocular; 2 postoculars; temporal scale formula 1 + 2 + 3. According to the same authors, this species is primarily found in forested regions or in savannahs associated with forested areas. In 2013, I received a pair of this species that had been imported earlier that year from Togo.
