[1.0 CB13 Heterodon platirhinos]

Back to Nightflight99's Animals

Reference Code: 1.0 CB13 Heterodon platirhinos
Species: Eastern Hognose
Heterodon platirhinos
Sex: Male
Death Date: 10/23/2013
Comments: Heterodon platirhinos was originally described by Linnaeus (1766) as Coluber simus, but this name was later mistakenly associated with Heterodon simus. The ICZN subsequently ruled that the law of priority would be suspended in this particular case because of the long history of usage (Platt 1985). Thus, Heterodon “platirhinos” (Latreille 1801) was adopted as the next oldest available name.

Its distribution range spans the eastern United States, ranging from Minnesota to New Hampshire, south to Florida, and west to Texas.

This is a highly polychromatic species, with multiple color forms occurring throughout its range.

I obtained a pair of hatchlings in September 2013, and look forward to working with this species again.
