Comments:	Heloderma suspectum was described by Edward Drinker Cope in 1869, based on it "differing in the more numerous scales on the head and body, in the shorter tail, and in coloration." At the time, the fact that helodermatid lizards are venomous was not known with certainty, although the evidence was beginning to mount. Cope therefore chose the species epithet "suspectum," as he "suspected" that it was venomous.
