Animal Name: Houdini
Species: Common Northern Boa
Boa constrictor imperator
Sex: Male
Comments: For some reason they don't have 'Boa Constrictor Imperator' as one of the choices on the list. ;) He's most definetely NOT a true red-tail though, but he's a pretty boy either way!

A little bit of history on this animal, I figure I should give him that.

He was my first boid, a rescue actually and though he wasn't in as horrendous shape as some rescues you see, he was well on the way of becoming one.

His previous owner's excuse for his condition, was that his pregnant girlfriend didn't want him in the house as it would 'eat her baby'.

At the time, Houdini was a little over three and a half feet in length and, due to the woman's flat out refusal to let him be anywhere within the house, was confined to a ten gallon tank, in a shed outside the house with little more than a blanket tossed over the tank.

I heard about him through a friend that lived in the neighborhood as people had found out about him, and the story went from a 'four foot snake' to a 'fourteen foot snake' that was 'on the loose, and currently living in a shed at the end of the street'. Tall tale? I'll say.

I went to investigate and knew the man's step-son, so he showed me this 'gigantic monster'. What I found, was an underweight, dehydrated snake that had a bone-dry water-dish, no substrate, urates all over the tank that crumbled to chalk upon being touched, and one rolled up shed skin in the corner of the tank.. and despite his condition, a very alert snake. He was hungry, you could tell, as anything that moved seemed worthy for him to attempt to eat and because of this, the owner deemed him 'aggressive'.

I asked what the guy was going to do with him, got a shrug in return and a 'Go ahead and take him..' so I did.. and I must say, for such an "aggressive" snake, there isn't a mean bone in his body.

He's never struck at me, hissed the odd time when he wanted to be alone, but this is a snake that I've come to trust enough to bring to educational programs at the schools. He's the biggest sweetie in the world and definetely was what sparked my addiction to boas and pythons.
