late 07 female normal Ball Python.
(Hatch date is approximate based on background information supplied by the previous owner and a friend of his.)

Rescued 1/16/10.

Previous owner had left a rat in with her for two days. This is why you should NEVER leave a live rodent in with a snake unsupervised.

The previous owners brought this snake into the pet store where I work for advice on what to do. I advised them that an immediate vet visit was in order, which they did, however the more I thought about the snake's condition, the more I worried that they would not have the experience or supplies to give the snake the best chance at survival. After tracking the owner down that night, I convinced him to surrender the snake to me. I picked her up the following day.

The first struggle with this snake will be to keep the wounds clean, to administer oral and topical antibiotic, and to get her healed up. Besides the wound, she is very undersized due to infrequent feedings, and appeared dehydrated and in need of several good sheds. The second, and probably more difficult task, will be to get her feeding again.

Update - Ophelia had three rounds of antibiotic injections at the vet clinic and then daily betadine flushes and applications of Silver Sulfadiazine cream at home.

Luckily Ophelia pulled through and healed up remarkably well. But the true test of her chances of survival would be if she would eat on her own. The good news is, Ophelia truly had the will to live, and took to eating frozen/thawed rats right away!

Now that Ophelia is all healed up, eating like a champ, and getting up to size, she is one of our best Animal Ambassadors. She is a true testament to why live feeding is dangerous, but also to the resilience of these animals and to why we should think twice before giving up on what seem to be hopeless rescue cases.
