Comments: We took this girl from a man who lost custody of his step daughter and was left with the snake. He said it was his daughter's pet and she handled Ninja daily. When she left, Ninja was no longer handled, he only fed her once every two weeks and then she began to grown aggressive. So, he put her up for sale. However, when I spoke with him, he explained the situation and said his daughter didn't know. He said he felt bad for selling his daughter's beloved pet but there was a slim chance that he will get his daughter back. He didn't really seem interested in making a profit off of the snake, maybe because of guilt or maybe because she was so nippy, but after a long talk, we came to an agreement that he would sell Ninja's (way too small) enclosure and would let me take her in and get her back to her old self, and in return for not charging me, I made a promise that in two months when he goes to speak to the courts if they let his step daughter return to him, I would happily give Ninja back to his daughter. As weird as that sounds, I really would. I feel for him and it sounds to me like his daughter loved this snake and took good care of her beside only feeding her once every two weeks. And he seemed very nervous about Ninja as well as confident that she didn't like him and would be happier with a female owner who could work with her.
So, I went to see her the next morning. It was very apparent that Ninja was nervous and hadn't been out in a long while. She struck and hissed at the air in warning a few times, but mostly nervously clutched my arm. However, she was obviously healthy, bright eyed, curious and very responsive. Her curiosity overpowered her nerves and she slithered about a bit. The guy seemed impressed. Honestly though, I think all she needed was a person with a little more confidence.
We talked about her and where she had come from and what they had told him about her care. I tried to politely correct any false information about her and he was very accepting. I don't think he realized just how large Ninja would get though.
Ultimately, I took her home and fed her immediately which she was very grateful for.
We took her to LLL Reptile grand opening in Santee CA. We had her sexed to double check and it would appear that she is in fact a she. She got lots of compliments about her health and color, and after we had been there for a while, she was slithering around and investigating as if she were any ol' tame snake. I have a feeling she is going to be a wonderful addition to our family if we do end up with the opportunity to make her a permanent member.
