Animal Name: Amai
Reference Code: Varanus Salvator
Species: Asian Water Monitor
Varanus salvator salvator
Sex: Female
Birthdate: 6/1/2011
Comments: Just to get this out of the way, yes I know this is the largest lizard species in the world by weight. We are expecting to devote the next 25 years potentially to the care of this possibly 10 foot lizard.

I can't explain exactly how this happened. This little guy/girl has been at our local LLL for the last two months and we've been seeing him along with other monitors there for some time. Every time, we stop to say hello and watch them paw the glass or hunt bugs or what have you. We have grown quite fond of a few in particular. Now, Dillon was actually impatiently waiting to get a frilled lizard as his next choice reptile, but seeing these guys along with other monitors owned by friends of ours has really made him second guess a bit. When this little guy was posted as the 'reptile of the week,' he asked if I would go check him out. "Check him out?" I asked, "As in you might want him?" I was a little surprised, but pleasantly. Dillon loves our tegu and he's really falling in love with big lizards as I have, which makes me so happy. I explained to him, though, that this thing is a comittment for its lifetime, and that I will not allow him to take on anything with the idea that he will just rehome it when it gets too big. That whole theory just makes me sick. We talked about it and considered exactly what he will require at full size. I didn't want to discourage him, but I needed to know he was serious and this wasn't going to be a temporary infatuation. Eventually though we decided to go visit him. So, we loaded up the truck and putted over to LLL (LOVE that place), where we fell in love with this little angel, and he pretty much 'chose' us. We couldn't put him down. And really, he wouldn't let us, contently perching atop my head and tongue flicking and looking around. He was so curious but still not trying to escape us and not about to be removed from either of us. He wandered from Dillon's shoulders to mine and back and forth. As we stood there, people started to ask about him and we became worried that he would be snatched up if we left him. So we took him home. The whole time I was setting up his new house, he did not want to be put back in any enclosure. If I put my hand in his enclosure, he would quickly scuttle up to me and up my arm and sit on my shoulder. I seriously had to put him to bed like a little baby. We love him to death already.

Nice. I used to have a subadult female salvator. She was amazing, and I miss her. One of the coolest pets I've ever had. I've been waiting to find the right one again ever since. I actually did find the right one in '08 at a pet shop. I was a 100% flawless 2' HY Sumatran that had been hand raised by a monitor lover since it was imported as a neonate. It had a great temperament too. Perfect. I offered to put a deposit down to hold it for the weekend and pick it up Monday, but they said that wasn't necessary. Wouldn't you know they sold it over the weekend. I was furious. I'll find another one day... -p-

Very cute story! I think an asian water monitor deserves a really cool Asian name! How about Thado (Kind of Berma), Sejo (king of Korea), Amai (means sweet in Japanese).. or go to google and type in English to whatever Asian language you want and type in your monitors personality words and see what cool name you might find! :D

Awesome animal, and cool story about how you got him. Since you're asking for names, how about "Dannos"? Yes, I did just randomly make that up, but the little dude looks like a Dannos to me.
